You know, in the end the music we hear all depends on the quality of the production. So I thought it appropriate for us to list producers from the era.

My fave NW producer is a three-way tie between Trevor Horn, Mike Chapman, and (the much maligned) Stephen Hague. The worst? Nile Rodgers. That guy was the kiss of death to everything he touched.

Come on people, who are some of your favourite (and most hated) New Wave producers???

Some faves:

Steve Lillywhite (everything he touched was good, a close runner up to Martin Hannett)
Bob Sargeant
Hugh Jones
Mike Hedges
Dave Allen (shaped the sound of the Cure and so much more)
Mike Howlett

I will have to think about who I hated as a producer.

Although Stephen Hague was talented and was involved in some classic albums, I don't think I like the direction he took bands after he worked with them. Too glossy for me.

Stephen Hague should not be maligned. Absolutely one of the most important producers of that decade.
He could make great bands sound amazing (New Order 'True Faith')and had the knack of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

It's hard to argue with any of the above listed producers (my faves are Steve Lillywhite and Trevor Horn).

Minty, I thought Nile Rogers did a great job on Bowie's "Let's Dance" lp. He was able to mix of a new wave hero with a Texas blues guitar player into a pretty innovative sound that still stands up today. I think he did a decent job on Madonna's 2nd album as well.

I hate his production on INXS's "Original Sin", and not only did he kill my favourite Duran Duran song (The SatRT version of "The Reflex" is my fave DD song of all-time), but he basically marked the death of one of New Wave's greatest bands ("Notorious" [xx(] and "Wild Boys" [xx(])
