Extreme Max, but I like the way you think. I feel the need address my earlier comments regarding Violator (which I promptly removed since I felt so attacked). When I referred to it as "pop crap", I didn't mean the style of music. It just seemed that they were so "mainstream" alternative by then that it was definitely the end for me. Like Violater was the true music for the masses. I hope that clears it up a bit as I wasn't trying to offend anyone. But I still don't get how it could be #1 on any New Wave fan's list.

I liked the "pop" sound that Vince contributed to DP. When he left everything went to hell.
On the flip side, when Vince formed Yazz I bought that and was disappointed with that effort so I shut the door on Vince and DP. Now I have heard DP over the years (a friend is a massive fan) and was not impressed at all.
Although I like gloom and doom in music, DP gloom and doom just doesn't do it for me.

There's some great stuff on Speak and Spell, though, such as Any Second Now and Puppets.
While music is the most important aspect, the lyrics on Speak and Spell were pretty much shit.

I think it's a pretty nebulous area to delve into. Speak And Spell was a Top 10 hit in the U.K. so that would be considered pretty mainstream I would think (at least in Britain). I recall Depeche Mode having a lot of mainstream cache with the Lionel Richie/Huey Lewis/Top 40 crowd in the America when "People Are People" came out. Certainly it was as inescapable on the radio in NYC as Madonna's "Material Girl". The difference, I think, is in the perception of "mainstream" being automatically bad simply because the masses like it. I personally don't believe that, otherwise we'd all be on here saying Bowie's Berlin trilogy with Eno was shit because he had a #1 pop smash with "Fame" a few years before and therefore should have been written off as pop garbage no matter what he produced.

Music is all that matters to me. Lyrics, not so much. I listen to the voice like an instrument, I'm really don't care what is trying to be said.
