This is from a tape an old friend of mine dug up. It's been stumping me for some time now. I think the song came out in 1984 or possibly '83. You can get a short sample here:

Just heard from my friend who heard from his friend who made the tape. The guy who made the tape with this song has no idea.

I'll make one last plea then I'll have to consider this one lost in the mists of time. Kind of sad - it's a catchy little song.

The chorus goes:

I've got news for ya baby
I'm breakin' through
I've got news for ya baby
On to something new
I've got news for ya baby
It's time I made my own rules
(or maybe "This time I make my own rules")

The song's got to be called "Make My Own Rules" or "I've Got News for You Baby" or something like that. The band just sounds like they'd be named "Somebody and the Somethings".

So I take it no one's got a clue. Sigh... Thanks to everyone who tried.

I have one song by Someone and the Somebodies, it's not the one you need though. They were based out of Boston circa 1981. The have an EP out, the [i]Bops on the Head EP[/i] (1981). So what's the record for most views without an answer? This query has 182 as of right now. I've even got a decent quality sample. After hanging out here for a few months I'd become convinced that the stuff I listened to was pretty mainstream. I guess I did listen to at least one real obsure song.

I suspect that many of these "unidentified" clips were local bands who did not get wide play, and as a result not much recognition.

Very true. I spend a lot of time hunting down records and without fail, the truly obscure ones are local releases, usually on small labels or privately released. Don't despair though Scramjet, I've found songs with pressings of 200 or less numerous times. Once you get a group or title, you'll find it.

BTW, I've listened to the link and I can't help you with this one.

The song was on a tape made by a friend of a friend who was a DJ on our Wasatch Front new wave/modern rock station (I can't remember if it would have been KCGL or KJQ then) so he had access to all sorts of stuff. One of my friends (also a radio DJ) emailed him the clip and he says he can't remember.

Red x red- This guy is still on the air. If you ever listen to 107.5 in the afternoons - Biff Raff (his real name is Bruce Jones) made the tape in question.

It's certainly possible that it's a local band. The only Utah new wave band that I'm aware of was The Klick. Red x red has an lp that he tells me he wants to rip to digital.

No, I'm almost positive it is not "The Klick" - your clip contains a very different sound from the Klick's style.

I simply haven't found time yet to rip it to digital. [:I] I will get it done one of these days and I will make copies available to all.

I remember Biff Raff. I'm afraid, however, that I don't listen much the live radio anymore for music - I do listen to Sport's radio. I haven't listened to 107.5 in over a year.

Could this be "I've Got News For You" by Michael Furlong? The year and song title sound right, but from the review of Furlong's "Use It or Lose It" LP on AMG it sounds iffy:

Michael Furlong belts out head-on, up-tempo 80s corporate rock, reminiscent of metallic Michael Bolton, Giuffria or the brilliant Aldo Nova and the crashing wave of Canadian pop-metal. This vinyl is worth more because of its rarity than actual musical content, but any sincere student of AOR will dig the sharp hooks, spacy keys and sizzling axe. Records wrapped in sleeves which display the artist posing with guitar on both front and back just don't exist anymore, so you know if this is your bag, and Use It or Lose It remains a treasure of its type. Backed by a powerhouse band of West Coast studio vets, Furlong keeps things short and fast. Unfortunately, an American Bandstand appearance couldn't stop the sands of time from burying this LP, leaving Furlong to run with the Wild Dogs and later create a touring Tom Petty tribute.
