Similarily the band 10cc took their name from the average amount of fluid produced by the male orgasm.
For real? The average porn star maybe.
I like ones with the "in" references:

Heaven 17 from A Clockwork Orange
Joy Division from House of Dolls
Duran Duran from Barbarella
UB40 from the welfare form
Level 42 from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
U2 was the American spy plane which crashed in the Soviet Union during an international conference in Russia, much to the embarrassment of the Americans in attendance.

As a graphic designer I always liked the name ALTERED IMAGES. But my all time favorite is SHRIEKBACK. I don't have a clue as to how it originated, but it seems to encompass the energy of the band's music.

Her real name is Susan. Siouxsie & the Banshees is a great name. It sums up the image and sound of the band really well.
First one that comes to mind for me is "Camper Van Beethoven" ! I've listened to them since the early 80's and never had a clue as to the origin of their name. I need to let my fingers do the walkin' on the keyboard and search the net.

That's easy!

You go camping in a camper van... and then Van Beethoven. Like tying two phrases together.
