I read through this whole thread and i'm glad I took the time. I cannot recall such entries that would have so much impact in my life. I finally now how to use those #$%@*$#!* emoticons [:o)][:I][8D][:D][:)][:p][}:)][8][B)][:0][:(!][^][:X][V]

It's only because not all encoders are built the same. ITunes built-in one is Fraunhofer, which is outdated. I guess they didn't want to file lawsuits with all the other MP3 encoders floating around (FhG invented MP3), so they put their resources towards AAC instead.

FhG has problems sometimes when encoding in joint stereo (which is why I eventually switched to LAME), and it's implementation of VBR isn't very good either.

I guess you can configure Itunes to use LAME, but unless you want to use Itunes to organize your library, you're better off using something else.

As for ripping CDs, I'm guessing that when error-correction is enabled, Itunes just interpolates when an error is detected, thereby not giving a dead on balls accurate rip. I think this because if you put in a heavily scratched disc, Itunes just chokes and gives up, resulting in an incomplete track. The worst thing about this is that it doesn't even tell you that it couldn't rip the track!

There's no need. As mentioned, MP3 can create an indistinguishable file from the original CD in blind listening tests. For higher than CD quality, AAC may sound better though. Of course AAC has the bitrate/quality advantage, but loses out severely in the compatibility area.

The itunes/lame plug-in is only for Mac. For Mac, I guess Itunes is okay, as I don't think there's any secure ripper available.
