WFMU is honored to host and broadcast live the UK artpunk legends WIRE, performing for a free audience at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza in New York, Thursday October 9th. This concert is the last in WFMU's Free Music Series, celebrating WFMU's 50th Anniversary. The band, which started in 1977, will be on a US tour in support of their newest release Object 47, info and dates at their site.
While a free show, there will be advance tickets distributed for this event, and those may be obtained at Other Music (15 E. 4th Street, Manhattan) starting on Wednesday, September 3rd. They'll be available during store hours while supplies last in increments of two per person.

Awesome set tonight! Irving Plaza (I assume) upped the house lights and turned on the music after the 2nd encore - but then the band came back out to the 3/4 or so of us who were left...and did 2 more encores.

Typing while riding in back of car is making me sick. More later.

Yup! Great show... 1 1/2 hours, 3 encores!! Don't have a set list, but they did play Silk Skin Paws!!!!!, a shocker since they really don't do those mid 80s tunes anymore. I was joined by new pal Patty, photographer extraordinaire (she took the picture of the Nerves on their upcoming cd release-personally requested by Peter Case!)

And after the show was surprised to be greeted by Ebbhead (and Cootie girl).

Was it only 3 encores? For some reason I'd thought it was 4. I was so confused by them coming back to the stage. Either way, great night.

Good seeing you too, schwenko. Cootie Girl had the eagle eye and spotted you in the wave of people out front.

With his usual ascot and tophat, he's hard to miss.

Was the setlist much like Cambridge? I thought it was just incredible. No 1 2 X U, Map Ref, or Mannequin, but my brain wouldn't have been able to handle all three anyway.

I confess that I cannot identify every Wire song, especially since the titles often bear no obvious relationship to the lyrics, but this was posted on the pinkflag.com message board by someone I know as "eardrumbuzz"

I too was blown away by the inclusion of "Silk Skin Paws"! The 80s sorta-synthy stuff translated well onstage.

Several of us in Vancouver were very put out when WIRE canceled the day of the show here. I haven't heard why yet.
