the machines that play DVDs are constantly being up graded, advertised, glamorized,and a consumer society reacts as it is told to react by media;
the machines that play CDs, the last major innovation,design, campaign,commercial push was when?......Exactly!!

The players aren't upgraded first. The MEDIA is upgraded first (e.g., DVD to Blu-Ray). The market reacts to the MEDIA not the players. And just because a brand new format is pushed by the manufacturers, it doesn't mean the public necessarily wants it. History is littered with formats that the studios/labels thought they could up-sell/re-sell to consumers but were ultimately rejected by the market: quadrophonic, laser disc, betamax, SACD, mini-disc, digi-cassettes, DualDisc, etc.

CD players have not been significantly upgraded because the media itself has not been upgraded. Physical CD's from today have pretty much the same characteristics as CD's from 30 years ago.

I agree, but I was refering to the introduction of flat screen/HD visual, 3D TV screens, new innovations that add sizzle to the format,;
sizzle in the music biz is non existant, the labels took everything for granted and just allowed things to remain as they were for decades,not to mention ridiculous price points
