I hate these lists because of the time they take doing them. My tastes have changed somewhat since last time we did this and there was 100 songs. This time we're doing half that and it's tough deciding who stays, who moved up (or down).

I decided to go the one song per band route that some others have adopted. Some lists like MikeP's and Panorama's will soon be playlists on my 120gb Zune.

I am intrigued by Frank Chicken's list of obscure lesser known songs. My hat is off to you sir, but Buckner & Garcia???

I used to get a kick whenever I heard a New Wave Band like the Smiths or XTC on the radio. Now I hear them in the grocery store and in restaurants.

You have to remember that over here 'Pac-man Fever' is unknown so I come to it with fresh ears; I love the song and love the album.

Props for choosing 'Plastic Age' rather than the obvious choice as that too was my favourite song of theirs. Some fine choices on your list, sir.

Thanks for sharing Doug. Just a heads-up though that I can't tabulate this along with the rest given that I'm giving rank-order points to the songs based on preference. If you simply wanted to share, then all good. If you want it included in the summation, maybe give a crack at ordering the top 50.

A final general note: I also won't be including any blatantly non-New Wave, non-Punk, non-Post-Punk, etc lists in keeping with the spirit of the poll going back the last few years. It wouldn't make sense to arbitrarily change its context when we have dozens of previous submissions based on broadly recognized criteria. Such choices will obviously still be on display in this thread for the submitter to proudly share with the rapt NWO audience. I'd be happy to curate or have someone else curate a Top 100 of All Time or other some-such list however.

Thanks again to all the submitters. Some are disappointed in the turnout - I think it's still pretty good given what a pain this is. I'll likely start tabulating later this evening.

That is a juicy fallacy worthy of some of our conservative American politicians. "Either supportive encouragement or North Korea." As someone with a PhD in philosophy, I personally don't mind dissent--I just dissented with you, in fact. No one would ever grow in understanding if there were no discussion and disagreement. It is the lack of civility that is tiresome.

A British philosopher published a famous book called "After Virtue" that argued that we have lost the concept of virtue. In his view, we don't even understand virtue anymore. I think that the internet has ushered in a post-civil society in which people no longer see that something is MISSING. Things are as they ought to be. As someone with young kids, I find it sad.

Anyway, I've taken enough bait. I'm done on this particular topic!

I remember listening to this band, and this song, a lot back in '85 or '86. Was the band considered new wave? To me they were in the same stream of bands as REM and the Replacements. I think we called it "underground music" at the time.

Like I said, it becomes a never ending task.

Inevitably I would painstakingly craft my initial comprehensive list. Then the editing would begin. After several revamps I would be left to wonder what other morsels I had overlooked. And then, with each subsequent review I would want to change something. Do I really like "Take On Me" better than "I Ran"? Depends on the day, my mood and what I had for breakfast. It quickly becomes an exercise of arbitrary choices. Plus we could be here for months.

All that work only to have some Rockwood inevitably screw it up with their Johnny Hates Jazz and Michael Sembello selections. Maybe I just have a bad attitude...

HW- Only 53 posts under your belt and you're already concluding that we have a lack of civility? Takes most people at least 100 to figure that out. Must be the fancy PhD and all...

Plus I have over 4000 lines of song submissions. Like I said, it all comes out in the wash, and ultimately we're looking for general trends, not what actually, absolutely, resolutely are your top 50 songs forever and ever and ever.

Plus to HW, I think you're missing a lot of good natured snarkiness - it'd be boring if we played it all straight-up. Sure there's real negativity, but it's not like you don't chose to ignore and pay attention to certain people in the real world too. What's the difference?
