SHARE: Obvious - Obvious (1985) RARE LP

I know extremely little about this band, but I like them a lot. Obvious released one LP in 1985 (self titled) and a 12" single for Little Misunderstandings which I'm trying to track down right now. Obvious are Dwight Marcus, Ken Vidal and Ethan Green. My favorite song on this LP is "Sacrifice" take a listen to it, I have a hunch you guys might like too.

The album has a few too many cheesy ballads, but a couple really grow on you. Another standout track from the album is the opener "Walk Faster"

I just downloaded the album and like every song on it! I love the smooth harmonies, the emotional crooning vocals, the many different synth sounds, the incorporation of saxophone, trumpet, and acoustic guitar, and I especially ADORE the clean, percussive, The Fixx-esque electric guitar playing. Here's my rundown of each song:

1. Walk Faster: A cool opening track with a steady, moderate beat and two awesome guitar solos (one after the second chorus and another during the outro). Reminds me of a forest at night.

2. I'll Be Near You: One of the few ballads on this album. The haunting windchime/thumb piano/SFX intro was a creative move in my opinion. The rest of the song reminds me of "More Than Words" by Extreme. The majority of the song might sound somewhat cheesy to some, but it grew on me the first time I heard it. Reminds me of a couple or a parent/child separated for hours between work and home or school.

3. Tunnel O' Love: Not to be confused with the Bruce Springsteen song. This is a more upbeat track à la Genesis, complete with horn-laden sections, staccato guitar, and layered backing vocals. Reminds me of a Sunday morning contemporary service at church.

4. Sacrifice: One of the best songs on this album. A moderate chug-a-long beat with triplet sixteenth drum fills, powerful vocals, beautiful electric and acoustic guitars, and icy synthesizers, plus a trumpet solo towards the end.

5. Little Misunderstanding: A catchy song with a decent beat. Could have done a bit more to it, though. And what's this I hear about Obvious releasing a single for this song?

6. Possibilities: Clearly some Middle Eastern influence in the music.

7. Lonely Is: Another ballad, the slowest song on the album. The guitar makes it even better.

8. Rules of Love: A faster, upbeat song with cool synths, a good bass line, and catchy lyrics: "Love is love, and like is like, not the same thing..." This would be a fun song to dance to.

9. Forbidden Fruit: This track is sort of seductive in a way. The title of the song reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve. After listening to the song, you know you want to taste it. XD

10. Who Am I Foolin': A dancy pop track with continuous ultra-staccato synth, a good bass line, and once again, that clean electric guitar. The line about Chicago style pizza makes me hungry...

I listened to the track "Sacrifice" (which I love) and I kept thinking, "This guys' voice sounds so familiar!" and if you listen closely, you'll hear certain parts where he sounds a little like "Pascal Languirand" from the Trans-X album "On My Own", which was a bit more pop than wave:

Does anyone know what specific effects pedals Kel and Ethan use for the electric guitars on this album?

Thanks for sharing the album! These guys rock! All the songs are wonderful, including the ballads, and the lead guitarist plays really well. The trumpet/sax solos are always fun, but I felt that there needed to be more guitar solos. Overall, a gem worth listening to.
