I had my own New Wave morning the other day: we legislative budget staff had to pull an all-nighter to get the budget bill done before a deadline. We didn't have time to get any sleep before the next meeting so we went to the local Denny's just after sunrise . . . just like in the old Skoochies days.

For reasons I don't fully understand, the Denny's was playing 80s New Wave classics (New Order, Pretenders) plus some so-bad-it's good 80s dance (Madonna, etc. I still love Madonna . . . just not in a DJSoss way). Nothing like some great New Wave to fire me up for putting in another day's work. I wonder what advertising researcher told the Denny's corporation to play this stuff at 7:00 on a Saturday morning.

Although our state capitol is pretty amazing in the spring, the surroundings still didn't match Blir's photos.

Digging up an old thread here – had to because I just noticed that it’s almost exactly three years after the original, and coincidentally, I was in the city again and had the opportunity to retrace the steps of one of my favorite mornings of all time. This time, I did my walk thru Central Park in reverse. I was done early with my appointments and arrived at Grand Central at 42nd and Park at around 2:30. I didn’t need to meet up for dinner before the Goldfrapp concert at the Beacon Theater on the west side at 74th and Broadway until at least 5pm. Perfect timing for a walk!

This time I entered the park on the southeast corner near the Children’s Zoo to the tunes of Jonathan Reichman’s “Springtime In New York” – freakin’ magnificent! The rainy gray morning had cleared to become a spectacularly sunny and brisk spring afternoon. I must have had a giant stupid shit-eatin’ grin on my face as I strolled by all the people in the park - 'Springtime' is too cool a song. After that, I was fishing for tracks to listen to and rather than repeat the new wave stuff, I fired up Goldfrapp’s “Seventh Tree” album. Holy crap – this whole album has got to be designed just for this kind of thing. It’s otherworldly. If you have it, you gotta try firing it up on a nature walk somewhere.

The airy notes of “Clowns”, “Little Bird”, “Happiness”, “A&E”, etc were the perfect accompaniment on my back-track thru the Balto Tunnel, down Literary Walk, and down to the Bethesda Fountain. And it all feels like a perfectly sync'd soundtrack to a video because flower petals are falling and swirling all around, couples are walking together, kids are playing – it’s freakin’ surreal! I get down to the fountain and they’re shooting a movie. A bit beyond that, there’s a camera crew photographing just about the most stunning model I’ve ever seen in my life. By the time I’m coming out of the Brambles, the wonderfully upbeat “Caravan Girl” is playing, and I sit to wait for Schwenkio to grab a bit before the concert, the chilled out “Monster Love” perfectly finishes off the album with a downtempo draw-down. Freakin’ amazing. And I hardly even noticed that I had just walked up 32 streets and across 8 avenues to the other side of Manhatten!

Sorry to gush…felt compelled to share. And no, no mushrooms or any other mind-altering substances were involved…but if they were, shit, fuggedaboutit. [8D]

It was a Canon EOS Digital Rebel.

Those are nice shots Blir and still good to see them after a couple of years.
