No one mentioned the Silicon Teens "Music For Parties" album. It's entirely techno remakes of early 1960's classics.

And the Dickies did some great punk covers of classics like "Nights in White Satin," "Banana Splits Theme," and "Eve of Destruction" to name a few.

How about They Might Be Giants "Istanbul is Constantinople?"

I think Robey's was packaged for the dance market and Murray Head for the rest of the human race.

I remember hearing Robey more on the radio at the time.

Robey's version was more of a dance single yes, which is why it only made it to #77 on the charts. Past, present and future, Dance Music has never been and probably never will be a major top 40 contender on Billboard

Did u know Murray's version is actually a Broadway Showtune?

I think it was a major contender in the late '70's to the mid '80s - Disco, euro, dance-pop, etc. Now it's all rap & hip-hop. I guess some people consider that dance - I don't...

And yes, One Night was from the play Chess - written by Benny & Bjorn from ABBA.

I know what you mean. It's pretty much all hip hop. Every now and then I peek at today's Billboard Dance charts, and well over half of the songs are r&b and hip hop

The Lords of the New Church covering Madonna! The cover of the 12" was the band holding up Stiv wearing a wedding dress.

Don't think anyone mentioned the Communards' "Don't Leave Me This Way".

The Fun Boy Three version of "Our Lips are Sealed" doesn't really count as a cover, does it? One of them was a co-writer.

I always liked Kirsty MacColl's cover of Billy Bragg's A New England. And Morrrissey's cover of the Jam's That's Entertainment is nothing short of genius.
