80's black bands with some NW influence

These bands used synths and drum machines quite a bit.
Some of their songs have new wave sounds to me.

Shalamar - "Dead Giveaway", "Second time around".

Gap band - "Party train", "You dropped a bomb on me".

Dazz band - "Let it whip".

Yes? No? Any other bands you can think of?

How 'bout producers like Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers? Or, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who wrote and produced "Human" for the Human League?

Schwenko, how could I forget "Let the music play". If it's the same one I'm thinking of, it's by an artist called Shannon. Kind of a one hit wonder, but totally uses loud drum machines and keyboards - sounds awesome.

Oh, I started a very similar thread not too long ago - - I'd reference it but I'm not sure how to do it or where it is...there were some good ones listed on that one as well. Midnight Starr "Operator" off the top of my head.

I definitely agree with you on the similar qualities of the music, with the keyboards and drum machines.


Only slightly off topic - - does anyone remember the Village People putting out their "new romantic" album? You know, I always wanted to hear it but never have. Was it godawful or not as bad as you might think?

I don't know if I'd call this music new wave influenced, I can see the connection though. There was a real electro trend in R&B for the early '80's. I tend to think in turn that SOME new wave was influenced by R&B's use of keyboards from the disco era. I also think it all was a natural evolution from eurodisco (Giorgio Moroder/Donna Summer, Boris Midney, Grace Jones, Munich Machine, Voyage, Cerrone, etc.)

For me, the groups that seemed to walk the line between New Wave & R&B were Freeze, Was/Not Was, & Material.

By the way bpdp - it was truly godawful.

I'd forgotten about Grace Jones. Slave to the Rhythm is a good example of a blend of R&B/NW.

Andre Cymone-released an LP called Livin in the New Wave(1982), played with Prince.songs What Are We Doing here? Dance Electric

Bar Kays-Freakshow on the Dance Floor(1984)

Cameo-She's Strange(1984) Word Up(1986)

That's all I can think of.

I guess Vanity's solo album Wild Animal- the one that got Tipper Gore's panties in a bind would fall into this category.

The Bus Boys first record had a new wave vibe to it IMO, I remember really liking them when they played on "Fridays". On the punk side of the coin, I have got to mention the Bad Brains.
