90s Songs for 80s People?

This thread is a reminder of why I remember so little of the music of the '90's. With few exceptions, it was a musical wasteland. The 2000's doesn't look much better. Man, I'm becoming my dad.

How about anything from the Posies' "Dear 23"? OK, that violates the one-song per artist rule. Let's say "Golden Blunders."

While I don't think all 90s music sucked, ya gotta feel for the Posies, playing beautiful power pop in Seattle when all anyone wanted to hear was grunge.

LOL. I think you have! As a teen in the 80's I had to hear my Dad and everybody my Dad's age rave about the music of their youths (the 60's)and how today's (the 80's) music was a wasteland of garbage. Now most everybody on this board in their 30's and 40's raves about the music of their youths (the 80's) and how today's (the 90's, 00's) music is a wasteland of garbage. So this idea that entire decades of music can be written off beacause it's "not as good as when I was a teenager"...well, I don't think there's much reality in it.

A short comment. IMO, some of the bands you've mentioned do not belong to the 90's. First they released their first LP's in 89 I believe and they don't sound like 90's bands. Namely: The Sundays, The Stone Roses, The Lightning Seeds, The Beloved etc. You will also notice that they carry the distinctive "The" before their names and as far as I'm concerned they are New Wave bands. Furthermore they were part of the playlists of the mythic NW radio stations XB102 and BM 105 in Manila where I was fortunate to have been based.[:)]

Many of our 80s bands released their first material in the 70s too...they're no less 80s bands. I think most people got my general drift. You got any bands to contribute or are you just heralding your arrival in the peanut gallery?

Blir, I was just saying that some songs like Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored and Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends for example have been released in 89 by New wave bands, so I say may be, they don't fit in the thread. On the other hand songs by Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains , Screaming Blue Messiah etc IMO are more representative of the 90's .[:)]

Unless I missed it, I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned Bob Mould's post Husker Du band Sugar. IMO they put out some great stuff in the 90s. BTW, Bob's latest solo disc absolutely rocks!

join in [:p][:D], but I'm not throwing in multiple songs. Instead, I'm listing several full ALBUMS! Forgive me, Blir![:D]

These are the albums I have bought in the 90's which are highly recommended:

POPSICLE - "Lacquer" and "Abstinence" (Love these albums to pieces! Very catchy songs! They also released "Stand Up and Testify" but I have no idea how it sounds).

THE DARLING BUDS - "Crawdaddy" and "Erotica"
THE POSIES - Frosting on the Beater
THIS PERFECT DAY (self-titled)
BLAKE BABIES - Innocence and Experience
The BREEDERS - Last Splash
BELLY - King (even the album "Star" is quite good as well)
LUSH - Split
LEMONHEADS - It's a Shame about Ray
PULP - I love all their albums!

... and then of course, we have SUEDE, WEEZER, and BLUR with really good albums released.

I have to add The Flaming Lips' album- "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart" which features the song "She Don't Use Jelly"...

Also Smoking Popes' "Born to Quit". I love this album!

Radiohead is a great band. I can see their appeal to NW fans.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to mention the best alt rock band no one knows about, "The Tragically Hip." I might have mentioned them on NWO before. They're from Kingston, Ontario. I remember first seeing them on SNL in 1995. I think they got a lot of airplay on our local alt rock station because of our proximity to Kingston. Their album "Day for Night" is one of my favorites of the 90s.

I'm frenz with the Lips. Well, now I'm more like an acquaintance since they've gotten so big and are gone all the time and surrounded by people glomming onto them, but I grew up going to see the Flaming Lips from their earliest days and over time became a pretty big hanger-outer at Stately Wayne Manor in OKC, 15 miles up the road from where I sit right now.

During the "She Don't Use Jelly" era (the "Satellite Heart" and "Clouds Taste Metallic" albums), their guitarist was a guy named Ronald Jones. He is a HUGE new wave fan and I think his love of that really flavored those two albums (which contain some of the most interesting/twisted pop of the 1990s).

In fact, during those years the Lips used to perform Queen & Bowie's "Under Pressure" and A Flock of Seagull's "Space Age Love Song" regularly live.

Are those images for a Rialto video? Witch one? I've never heard of them -- any songs you can reccomend?
