After reading a fair amount about it I picked this up on CD over the weekend. It is not 'next wave' or even new wave but it definitely has the kind of "brand new music style" feel I used to get about every other month back in the day.
It's a female singer from Sri Lanka with some pretty innovative electronic music backing her. Lyrics often veer to the political as opposed to the usual dance-music fodder. It really wouldn't have sounded that out-of-place in the early 80's yet it feels throroughly modern to me as well.
I'm wondering if anyone else out there has heard this - - it's really an interesting release.

M.I.A. is amazing and I really don't know what you'd call her music. I've been playing tracks from that record since it came out. "Bucky Done Gun" especially.
She's getting critical raves (deservedly) but I think narrow-minded radio programmers don't know what to do with her.
