I've used apples, squash (squashes???) and many a soda can, but never thought to use a human skull. My first thought was "that's a lot of work just for a pipe".

Yeah, I'm sure that boy was into a lot more than just pot. Stoners generally shy away from the Dead. Hmmm, never tried a squash, but, I did smoke pot out of a pepsi can with the drummer from Berlin at a gig in Fullerton, CA. They were the band right after
