APB "Something to Believe In"

Postby tomfin2000 » Fri Jan 13, 2006 11:19 am

I had the original link CD and I ended up just pitching it three or four years ago with with a bunch of other stuff because it wasn't worth anything at the time (or at least I don't remember it being worth anything at the time).

Oh well, at least I sold my original RPM Comsat Angels CDs a couple of years ago for a nice chunk of change!

As for APB, this is great news for those of you who are fans of the "Something to Believe In" album, but the one I REALLY want is "Cure for the Blues". I'm surprised there's no mention of this LP in the article linked above. It seems like they're dedicated to releasing just about everything else the band did.

Fuckin' A, man. I paid like $60 for it on eBay a few years ago. (@tomfin2000 - you got suckered if you didn't get a good price for it.) Damn it. Well, it'll be great to hear it re-mastered. Maybe it'll mean a little more exposure for one of the most underappreciated acts in new wave/alternative.

Never could understand why with the exception of a VERY minimal amount of airplay on WFNX Boston and KROQ LA, WLIR was the only champion of this seminal funk wave band. Sheer madness, I tell ya.

Well, the live tracks will be great, at least. Agreed that maybe it's time for me to start adding to the kid's college fund and put it up on eBay.

FYI, hope the dude's not here on this board, but I bought it *twice*. First copy was totally bizarre and sounded like bad FM static on every CD player I tried it in. Drawn out process to get a refund, but at the end of the day, I think the seller got his money back in the PayPal/eBay dispute, and AmEx gave me a refund as well, so I guess all things considered, it was a pain in the ass, but I wound up with a perfect copy of it that had none of the prob's.

Thanks for the link Dod. There is not much on the internet about APB. I, like ebbhead paid a crazy amount of money for the "Something to Believe in" cd on ebay. I am still buying the new release, for myself and a friend. I can't wait to hear the live versions.

This is an apb

Sorry to hear that you and others have paid big bucks for the CD in the past.
I appreciate that nothing much has been available on the web until now.
You can also find some apb info at http://www.myspace.com/apbtheband
and BBC session information can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/artists/a/apb/

Reviews of the re-release can be found here

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... d4vwxea92k

http://www.neufutur.com/

The apb websites have only recently appeared and not a lot of people know about them so it would be great if you could spread the word. They are not being picked up by search engines yet. You can become a friend of apb on the myspace page if you feel the urge. There is a strong possibility that some previously unreleased apb material may follow the BBC session release since the band have recently gone into the studio for the first time in many years. In fact it is the first time that Iain Slater, Glenn Roberts and George Cheyne have been together as a unit for quite some time. Iain Slater said that it was brilliant being back together again and the band are hoping for some exciting fresh results from their time in the studio.

I may have to check out the Peel Sessions disc. A couple of my favorites from "Cure for the Blues" are on there like "Hypnotic Love Affair" and "Wonderdrug".

Hey Dod: What's your relationship to the band? Do you work for Young American..and did you set up that website?

Ah, I wondered if someone would ask that! Yes I did set up the website and no I don't work for Young American.
Well spotted. You win the prize. Not sure what that is though.
I have a very close relationship with the band. Been to every single show they ever did. Well almost. Had a ringside seat as it were, since I was the drummer! I did say 'this is an apb'!! Anyway it is cool to find some folks who are interested in the forthcoming releases. Hope you like them and I sincerely hope those mp3 record buttons are not going to be used! Would appreciate it if you could inform any apb fans you know, about both the website and the forthcoming Young American releases. Calling all cars........as they say..........and to answer a previous question......apb doesn't stand for anything. It is just the name of the band.

George

George! It's been quite a while...I was in NY and DJ'ing for college radio when I met you and Glenn and Iain (and Bruce). I'm now a grown woman and have been waiting for APB material for years! It's making me feel like a kid again. My interest has never waned. I do have some questions (and stories) and even a copy of 'Dance Culture' from November 1989 featuring an interview with you and the boys (and The Close Lobsters) that I picked up from one of your Loop Lounge shows in Passaic, NJ. Mind if I drop you an email?

I don't think you need to be too concerned about that happening here. Virtually all of the mp3s that I've seen posted (and posted myself) are songs from LPs and CDs that have long been out of print. I think most of the people here are hesitant to post mp3s of stuff that's readily available. I know I am anyway.

Also, we're a pretty fanatical bunch. Even if we already have mp3s of a particular album, we would be the first in line to buy an offical release. "Cure for the Blues" is a good example. I already have the album on CDR (I transferred it from my original vinyl copy of the LP), but I would buy an offical release in a heartbeat, even if I already had perfect CD quality copies of the songs.

Which, of course, sets up the question I REALLY want to ask you quite nicely:

Are there any plans to release "Cure for the Blues" on CD through Young Americans? [:)]
