Hey Alex,

That cat is one slick dude!! [^]

I pre-ordered mine...looking forward to more
obscure songs for Volume 6.

Any idea if that will happen in 2006?

Also would still love to do a show featuring Vols 1-5
Hi-Bias never emailed me back, would you be up to stopping
by during the show? I am sure people have questions and
you may want to hear what they want on the next CD.

Thanks, DJ Wave

Dear Alex,

I want to thank you most highly for these compilations. I'm so EXCITED about this latest volume!!! Some of the tracks I've never heard before, and this is what I love about these releases. Although I am a HUGE New Wave/Synth fan, there are tracks that I've certainly missed out on when they were first released and now here is the opportunity to hear them with ultimate care and sound quality. I know a lot of these bands well, but sometimes their entire discographies were ellusive to my ears. I can't imagine all the time and trouble licensing these tracks and finding the original masters would take. And to find the people involved in them too!!!! WOW!!!! I am so grateful to you and the time you've spent compiling these discs. I sincerely hope that you'll continue to make these collections.

Respectfully and Gratefully Yours,

Jeffrey

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah we like to throw in a few lesser known tracks that fit the style. One thing about new wave bands is the regionality some of them had. Bands like The Spoons, Eight Seconds, Strange Advance and others had a big following in Canada while people like Maurice And The Cliches were regional hits in parts of the US. Endgames 'First, Last For Everything' was HUGE in Toronto and Buffalo, but apart from that was barely known to the average fan.
Even doing these CDs I am constantly discovering new tracks that were totally missed by me 'back in the day'. So with great supporters such as yourself, we hope to keep delivering these compilations.

I do find it so interesting how, like you said, some of these tracks managed to make a "buzz" in certains regions of the country while in others they failed to make a mark. Music and "musical tastes" vary from place to place. This music of New Wave/Alternative really "stimulated" me to pursue the "different", "the bizzare" and "the cutting edge". What a great time this was for challenging notions of what "is" and what "isn't" "POP".

I'm also curious to know if any DJ only mixes might make it on to future volumes. I know there was that wonderful DMC mix of Duran Duran on a previous volume. I can only hope that someday we can hear some of these re-worked versions from other Remix Services.

Again Alex, thanks for your input and AWESOME "OUT PUT" when it comes to researching and releasing classic alternatives!!!!

Jeffrey

P.S. I can't wait to hear what Zeus B. Held will have to say in the liner notes. That guy rocks as a producer!!!!

I'm glad for the CanCon that are the compilations, since we most likely woulnd't see them otherwise.

No offense to whoever puts these comps out (it sounds like his name is Alex?), but there is just way too much obscure stuff on these discs. Who's heard of "Alphaville" (wasn't that a movie?) or "Dead Or Alive" (I think that was a movie too). And why are all the tracks confined to just club 80's music? The comps completely ignore the other great 80's music that was out. Also, why can't we see some songs that aren't on other 80's compilations (like "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell or "Mickey" by Toni Basil)?

If I could have my dream track listing, it would look like this:

"Tainted Love" - Soft Cell
"Mickey" - Toni Basil
"Here I Go Again" - Whitesnake
"Walking On Sunshine" - Katrina & The Waves
"Relax" - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (hard to find song)
"Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)" - Timbuk 3
"Maneater" - Hall & Oates
"Bad Boys" - Inner Circle
"The Joker" - Steve Miller Band (not technically 80s, but still a great song)
"Motown Philly" - Boyz II Men
"Heaven Is A Place On Earth" - Belinda Carlisle
"Broken Wings" - Mr. Mister
"You Shook Me All Night Long" - AC/DC (this song rocks!)
"Get Outta My Dreams (Get Into My Car)" - Billy & The Oceans
"Word Up" - Cameo

I wonder if they ever considered that they could fit a lot more songs on the disc if they didn't use the long versions. I mean who wants to hear 8+ minutes of a song when all of us are used to hearing the regular version that's on the radio?

I know this is just one person's opinion, but I hope that the record company will consider some of my suggestions.

If the cd is not interesting to you, you could always not buy it. No one is twisting your arm. There's plenty of compilations out there that would fit your taste buds so you might do some hunting around. To a majority of us here, we want the obscure stuff so we are quite happy with this series. Oh, and yes, his name is Alex and he does put a lot work and time into these and many of us appreciate his efforts. I hope this series will continue to volume 100 because it is absolutely the best New Wave compilation around. Of course, that is just my opinion and no offense to anybody.

You Got To Be Kidding Me. [:0] (ALPHAVILLE)[:0][:0][:0]
These songs that you want do exsist. It`s called top 40.
You could probably find most of these songs on your list at your local Border`s Store.
PS If you haven`t listen to any of the previous Retro Active cd`s, you are really missing out on Great Music. Alex puts alot of energy & time in these comps. They are the best thing going in my opinion.

Puh-leez, you know damn well that anyone over the age of 25 that made such a statement in earnest would be laughed off this board in a heartbeat. If you know your Rubber Rodeo, then 'nuff said. I'm not sure what your trying to say here other than you must hold some contempt towards someone in this thread or the Retro:Active comps, which are very cool in my opinion and I welcome as many as Alex can muster!

Blakeh's post was obviously a piss-take (check his profile ... this is Blake from FirstCut.net), but I didn't get it nor found it be very funny.

Wow! I really over-estimated the capacity for people to have a sense of humor on this board. The whole message was tongue-in-cheek ("Mickey" never being on an 80's compilation... "Dead Or Alive" being obscure...)

In response to the idea that I haven't heard past volumes of Retro:Active or that I have some sort of animosity towards Alex (ha!), I can assure you that with even a little bit of investigation, you'll find that I've been a friend of the series and a supporter of Alex's efforts since he began with volume one.

To those of you who simply didn't find my post humorous... I beg to differ. But, you have a right to your opinion.

Now, where is that rare album version of "Venus" by Bananarama... [:)]
