Leave it to Starbucks to release a really kick ass compilation. You may not like their coffee but this compilation in second to none - IMHO.

My carpooling buddy was idly taking a look at it when we took a pit stop on the way to work. My first response was "Forget that; it's probably full of Culture Club and Duran Duran." (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) I told him I'd make him something better.

Then I took a look at the selections and was pleasantly impressed--a nice mix of less-than-obvious than obvious tracks by well-known artists, along with some that the average listener hasn't heard of--Hitchcock, the Sound. So, my second response was a little distress that some of the special parts of our youth were being pre-digested and packaged for general consumption. But I got over that pretty quickly and agree with Swamp Thing. I would recommend this to those who think New Wave was just Cyndi Lauper and Adam Ant (again, not that there's anything wrong with it). It was a good enough selection that I assembled it as a playlist on my iPod.

I guess I shouldn't be that surprised with Starbucks. They are the experts at producing commodities that are pre-fab, processed, and marketed to death, but nonetheless a higher quality than one initially expects. Speaking of which, I think it's time to walk over for an iced latte.

Nice Hexicon, I enjoyed your post.

Wanted to add that the compilation was produced by Rhino. Makes sense. Would be nice to know if Starbucks had any input or left the whole project up to Rhino. I suspect they outsourced the whole thing.

I had to revisit this post. I'm having a great morning as I type this right now at the Longwood Boston Starbucks over my morning coffee and wireless NWO check-in. [8D]

They must have known I was coming. Their music selection in just a 30+ minute span (to the best of recollection)...

New Order - Age of Consent (I shit you not)
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Talking Heads - And She Was
Roxy Music - Oh Yeah, On the Radio
Pretenders - Kid
The Smiths - William It Was Really Nothing
XTC - Senses Working Overtime

Man, that's a pretty killer selection for a pseudo-public medium, don't ya think?! [:p]

PS...and The Killing Moon as I was walking out the door!

PPS...um, duh, "Senses Working Overtime"...was this just the comp you guys were talking about. I don't have Flash loaded and couldn't see the playlist.

PPPS...Glok, I been here...but thanks anyway. As soon as I get some time, I'm gonna comment on some other comps...some AMAZING shit from Spaz that's just blowing my mind!

PPPPS...um, heh, I guess it was just that CD. Just checked the Flash playlist on my other computer. [:I]
