Thompson Twins Reissues - revived!

Thompson Twins Reissues - revived!

Postby Abacab » Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:28 pm

According to a certain "blogger" on a website that has been dedicated to Thompson Twins reissues, they have been revived! After appearing to be all but dead and buried, Jester has announced there is life: http://thompsontwins.moonfruit.com/. Although I hate getting my hopes up (not about the reissues themselves, but the quality), I wish all the best that they are truly the all encompassing sets that fans have been waiting for. The Thompson Twins have many mixes to their name. An Into the Gap Deluxe edition could take almost 3 CDs! Although I have an original pressing from 1984 of that album, my favorite next to Quick Step and Sidekick, an update remaster is not a horrible thing. I just fear a brickwalled, maximised and otherwise LOUD reissue that would damage my eardrums. So many promising reissues have turned out that way. The only sets that have not are the Depeche Mode Deluxe Editions. Simon Heyworth is an excellent engineer who balances modernity with taste. Thompson Twins 5.1 SACDs would be awesome! [8D] Voice your opinion on the site!

i'll believe this when i see it. that blogger's reasons for why they didn't happen last year were confusing, and fairly logic-free. i think he is very enthusiastic and WANTS it to happen, but...

What I'd like to see them do is release some of the "remixes/extended mixes" of TT on cd, as there are MANY wonderful ones out there for all to enjoy. I have some on Vinyl, and wish I could transfer them to CD, they are excellent.

Correction, seems they are dead....for good. Oh well. Back to listening to my old 1984 CD pressing.

I don't know what he's talking about regarding an 80 pound licensing minimum. That must be for all albums and not just one. Cherry Red can license an album from Sony for 1000 pounds, plus a percentage of sales, and that's that. They do pressings of 1000 with no real required amount to sell. They attempted to license the first two album and were denied due to Music Club's rehashed collection, though the chance for approval opens up again next year.

that guy's info is always suspect for sure. in the email that i got, he goes on at length like he's on trial, and then he's joan of arc, burning at the stake, and then he's off down a lonely road while the "bruce banner theme" whistles in the distance. and none of it rings true... i have all this stuff anyway and it sounds great- so i'm not frothing at the bit for these (like i was with doa's "boom boom").

Wow, there's a lot of moaning about some reissues, ie, tracks left off, wrongly named mixes, vinyl rips, but as long as these have at least decent sound then what great collections - just think back when you bought the original vinyl albums (or got them for Xmas) and played their 40 minutes of music, you were happy - now here we are 2 decades later with 5" shiny discs in neat little cases which contain pretty much every note recorded from those 2 album's sessions.
I hope edsel make loads of money from these projects which will allow other releases.

moaning is par for the course! but as far as these go: there is very little missing from "quick step"- the only thing i can think of is there was a "watching" 7" that was different; oh, and that must be the single version of "love on your side" with the quicker fade. but all in all, pretty stupendous. mastered from orignal sources? i sure hope so.

as for "the gap": maybe a time or two is different on the extendeds, and most notably a "let loving start" version is absent, but other than that- all those "you take me up" versions are great. and "passion planet"?!! yeah!

The only thing missing from Gap, AFAIK, is the 9-ish minute long promo-only remix f the title track. That was actually a fairly nice remix, and is semi-rare.

I agree, as long as they don't completely botch the mastering these are a long overdue and entirely welcome pair of collections.

if you can find the "greatest mixes" cd it's on that, which is one perk of owning it i guess. i was sad that most of the mixes are edits of the 12" versions. like, 2 and 3 minutes chopped off versions!

oh, and looking this over:

Into The Gap

DISC ONE:
INTO THE GAP
Doctor! Doctor! 4.38 / You Take Me Up 4.23 / Day After Day 3.50 / Sister
Of Mercy 5.04 / No Peace For The Wicked 4.04 / The Gap 4.43 / Hold Me

i can see the sister of mercy 7" is not here, the let loving start 7" versions (uk and us) are not here, the out of the gap 7" is not here.

not bad, really. nothing non-essential, as the sister of mercy single mix is on some collection or other, i'm sure.

now, i'd love to have the 7" "watching" on the qs&sk reissue. it's different enough, and never on cd. as for the 7" "lies" (pre-qs&sk i believe): this is a cool mix, in that it's the album version length with no reverb. those opening timbales sound really dry, and the snare too. it's odd, but very enjoyable. it's been on cd before, but i don't remember when. some long ago version of the multiple hits cd's they churned out.

I have to admit, I have been contacted by someone who is concered as to what source material is being used. The person shared with me some promo artwork, and may have some inside info. Though I won't be buying either of these, I will be interested in hearing feedback on the quality of the final products. Edsel seem to be slipping in quality as of late...
