Pete Burns comments on Sophisticated Boom Boom CD

Pete Burns comments on Sophisticated Boom Boom CD

Postby Rubellan » Mon Aug 27, 2007 11:36 am

I thought I would post this here. Pete has been commenting on the upcoming reissue of the Dead or Alive classic "Sophisticated Boom Boom". He expressed disappointment at not being involved, which resulted in my explaining the situation. For those who would be interested in seeing how it unfolded, check out:

Wow, that was neat! Very interesting that you were able to get somewhat direct contact with Pete regarding the album via the Dead Or Alive official website hehehe. I've never even owned "Sophistocated Boom Boom" on CD, but all the hubbub on these forums has really piqued my interest, and I'm anxious to hear all the extra tracks as well so I'm sure I'll be picking up a copy, especially if it may help lead to further releases.

SBB was the first thing i heard by them, i saw the video for "anything" on hbo video jukebox, and the man/woman lead singer confused and fascinated my pre-teen mind. it was funky, synthetic, strange, wonderful, etc.
i got the cassette and was in love with it, and imagine my delight to later hear the single for the next album, and to have it be a milestone in dance pop: "you spin me around"...
i blather on. SBB is super dancey, hyper-dramatic, surprising, and campy syntho. if that sounds like something you'd like, buy one. hell buy two so we can get more great releases!

Dear Scott,

Unbelievable!!! So happy to read the forum and to see Pete responding too!!! I can't wait until he and the rest of us hear your remastering magic. "Sophisticated Boom Boom" definitely made an impression on me back then and still, to this day, it takes my breath away. It was so awesome to read that it was Pete's favorite album too! I know this album is going to do extremely well. I'm ordering two copies of it, one for me and another for a dear friend. This friend only knows "You Spin Me Round" and Dead Or Alive is so much more than this song. I so wish Pete and Company stayed with Zeus B. Held. I loved Held's version of "Lover Come Back To Me" so much more than the S.A.W. version.

I really do hope that you Scott will be involved in all the other releases in DOA's back catalog. It is, afterall, through your love and talents that we are getting an extremely special re-release and remaster. Heck, I treasure the Haysi disc you did, so I'm buzzing to get "Sophisticated Boom Boom" in my hot little hands.

I just received my advance copies of KING and DOA, and everything looks and sounds great! The situation has been sorted out with Pete off the board, and he will be receiving his copies of SBB very soon. I'll be interested in hearing his comments, though this is one time I hope not to hear any of his (usually hilarious) bitchiness.

Does anyone know what Pete Burns thought of the new remaster? I've been checking the DOA message board, but nothing. Scott, have you heard anything? It would be extremely cool to know what the original artist thought of your work.

I've not heard any official comment from Pete. If he chooses to comment, I will post it here.

Cherry Red have stated SBB is doing well, and are interested in further DOA related releases. My first suggestions were the early singles, followed by the shelved 12" collection from a couple of years ago.

me too! i can't barely stand the early singles. it's too goth-y, yet with danceclub aspirations- it's not one or the other. my opinion, of course- i know lots of people stop their love of doa when stock aitken waterman get their grubby hands on them!

i think they really come into their own circa 1984 though. i'd LOVE to see the 12" collection, although if there were no "nude" era tracks on it, i'd be fine with that too. there are plenty of "youthquake" and "mad bad" (and hell, one or two "sbb" era dubs) tracks that could go on a 2 cd set...

but let's be truthful: i'll buy whatever! [:D]
(still listening to sbb almost daily)

To be honest, I'm only half hearted about the 12" collection. I will push for the early years first, but I don't have the final say..., just a strong hand in the project direction ;-)

Whatever you could get out is much apperacited, either is fine with me but would much rather see a 12" collection before the early singles/b-sides compilation.

Scott,

That's so wonderful about "SBB" doing really well. I would have lamented greatly if it did not. I so want it to be the catalyst for more things from Pete and Company, especially with you involved. Again, I can not convey to you or to anyone else for that matter, on what a miraculous thing you do with music. It's like this album was recorded from today and not back from the early eighties!!! I know you worked from the original CD issue for the "flat master" but what you did with the 12-inch mixes makes you a God in my book!!!! I never thought I would get to hear these mixes in such brilliant clarity and depth. And for that alone, I cherish this work of yours most highly, along with the Haysi work you did; and I WILL be getting the King disc as well.

Reading things from the DOA message board, I really don't know if Pete will comment. I've learned that once Pete is done with something he rarely looks back, because it's on with the next thing. I really wish he would break this rule, at least for once, and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

I would love the early singles to be released next, and - HOPEFULLY - down the road, the 12-inch Collection would be a wet dream come true for me, especially if some of the dub mixes were included as well. It is so important to preserve an artists' discography in the best sound possible.

It's so interesting talking about Stock, Aitken and Waterman. I can't remember where I read it, but the article said that Dead Or Alive might have been more responsible for their sound than S.A.W. was. Either way, I believe every individual involved helped inspire and motivate to bring out the best from every person who had a hand in shaping Dead Or Alive's overall sound.

Jeffrey

P.S. Can you explain to me the reason behind the US track listing being different from the UK version? I can't find my original CD, but wasn't some of it sequed into each other too? Any help would be appreciated.
