Thompson Twins Reissues - revived!

Postby moni » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:46 am

I have both remasters and to be honest i have not a clue what the fuss is about because to my ears they sound perfect. I just wonder have people nothing better to do with their time than sit and listen to a CD through headphones to listen out for the odd glich or humming. I'm not having a go at anyone here with this comment but come on EDSEL have put a lot of effort into these reissues and if it wasn't for them these would never see the light of day released on cd. To anybody reading this thread who is put off by the comments here buy these reissues because you won't regret it believe me and i don't work for EDSEL either.[:D]

I did a quick skip through with my initial listen, and I also thought there was nothing wrong with the reissues. Then, I started to read other people's reviews, and they weren't really that good. I thought those people were wrong at first, but then realized there were a lot of people saying the same thing over and over. So, I decided to give each CD a listen while wearing headphones (after all, one does need to wear headphones while using an iPod). Lo and behold, everything these people were complaining about was fact.

Since the Thompson Twins are my all-time favorite band and musical artist, I am going to be very picky with the quality of any release. How offensive your comment was about people not having nothing better to do with their time. Seriously...I ask for you to listen to two songs from the 2nd CD of Into The Gap while wearing headphones ("Still Water" and "You Take Me Up (Machines Take Me Over)")...and then tell me there is no hum, nor nothing wrong with either track.

Music collecting is my passion. It only makes sense that how I review music releases is full of passion, right? Edsel are promoting QS&SK and ITG as "Deluxe 2CD Editions". The only thing close to deluxe about them is the artwork and packaging. The sound quality is NOT Remastered, as representatives from Edsel had told us when we contacted them directly before each reissue was released.

If a die-hard fan of Thompson Twins is looking to purchase the reissues, I would warn them about the quality. If a casual listener is looking to purchase the reissues, I'd tell them to go for it. Edsel may have put a lot of effort into the artwork and packaging, but that effort turned half-assed when it came to the quality of the music.

I would, as I'm at the point right now that I feel I was taken advantage of. Not once. Not twice. But, three times now. Not only did I purchase the Edsel reissues of QS&SK and ITG, I also purchased the Demon Music Group's 2CD Love On Your Side The Best Of the TT (the latter being the worst of the bunch). I spent about $41 for the two reissues. Even though it's not a great amount, it does start to add up for all of the other fans that were suckered into buying them.

I actually feel like an idiot for falling into the trap these labels set...

Hey, I'm a die-hard fan, and I'm going to buy everything that comes out by my favorite band. Especially when there's a promise of "never before released on CD" tracks, pretty artwork and the word "remastered" is thrown in the mix.

I've cooled down quite a bit since my initial rant. I feel that if I allow myself to simmer down even more, I might be able to email Edsel/Demon Music Group in a professional and nice manner.

[:D]

moni...Did you ever take the Headphones Challenge? My guess is either you haven't, or you're a casual listener.

In reply no i haven't listened to them through headphones. I'm not disputing with anybody about the mistakes on these remasters i'm sure you are correct in what you are saying and on listening to them they do sound ok or is it you can only hear these problems using headphones. Anyway at £6.99 a pop you aren't really taking a risk i do wish everything in life could be perfect but it never is for the most part take the recent remaster Edsel did of The Secret Of Association which claimed to have the 12inch mix of of Everything Must Change yet it was an edited down single version annoying yes and the fade on the recent remaster of The Lexicon Of Love of the The Look Of Love (Part 4) is irritating as well. But anyway for the most part it saves you converting everything to CD and apart from a few odd gliches is good value for money.

I was so excited to hear about these re-issues but when I started reading some feedback (after placing my order) I started getting a little nervous. I'm happy to say that I personally am extremely pleased with this release of "Quick Step And Side Kick". I spent many many hours transferring my TT vinyl over the past few years (I posted much of here just about 7 months ago!) and I'm first off happy to hear first hand that all the bonus tracks here are obviously not from vinyl sources. I think they sound great and I would consider myself fairly picky when it comes to sound quality. But I also know that there are limitations to what can be done without drastically compromising the overall quality. Eliminating hiss for example can, beyond a certain point, affect high end signals like hi-hats. I almost never listen to anything through headphones anymore so I'm not concerned with how it sounds in that situation. Headphones can reveal all kinds of anomalies, especially with pre-digital recordings. So if you are a casual collector I definitely recommend this package.

I did notice that the versions of "Love On Your Back" and "Lucky Day (Space Mix)" are different from what I have in my collection. I have "Love On Your Back" from a recent cheap TT compilation CD "Hold Me Now" and it's completely different. And my vinyl with "Lucky Day (Space Mix)" fades out - this version has a cold ending! Cool!

I noticed someone posted a review regarding the errors on Into The Gap on amazon.co.uk. He/She claims to have contacted Demon/Edsel and they were "aware of the problems." Whether or not a fix is coming is a different story...

Alright, good to know just after my copy shipped [:)]. Oh well, I guess if there is a "fixed" edition, I can torrent it.

Whoa, just came across the "You Take Me Up - Machines Take Me Over" glitch. It should be renamed to "Static Take Me Over". It sounds like when someone forgets to clean the stylus, and there's a big wad of dust stuck on it. Obviously, they sourced this from a really shitty condition vinyl.

And yeah, Sisters of Mercy, right after, sounds like it wasn't mastered very well. Can't really describe the artefact-ing that occurs in the beginning of the track ...
