Upcoming John Foxx releases

Upcoming John Foxx releases

Postby schwenko » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:33 am

From the Metamatic mailing list

"Forthcoming releases...

Set to coincide with this years one-and-only UK live show with Louis
Gordon, John will release remastered double-disc editions of "The
Garden", "The Golden Section" and "In Mysterious Ways", together with a
new double compilation album entitled "Glimmer". All of these will
include previously unreleased material. Full details, including the
track-listings, will follow shortly.

In the meantime, Dub Terror have remixed the classic "Burning Car"
single for a twelve inch release which should be available later in the
summer. There are also plans for some of the "Quiet Man" text to be
featured on a spoken word album due for release in the autumn -
coinciding with John's appearance at the Town Hall in Leeds at the
beginning of November.

And, as if all of that wasn't enough, John has recently completed his
long-awaited collaboration album with Robin Guthrie (ex-Cocteau Twins)
- that's due for release early in the new year.

Looking further into the future, John has started to record new
electronic material with Paul Daley (ex-Leftfield), acoustic-based
songs with the actor Vincent Gallo and an ambient record with Steve
Jansen (ex-Japan). More news on all of these projects will be posted
just as soon as details are confirmed."

If those 2xCD sets are like the Metamatic release they'll be well worth tracking down.

Unfortunately, all of the Ultravox era tracks are recent renditions. I have to say I'm very unimpressed with the selection, and really only have interest in 1 song/version. Here are further details:

Glimmer: The Best of John Foxx is due for release through Demon/Edsel on September 22, 2008.

The album features some of John's most famous singles ranging from Underpass and Burning Car through to Endlessly and Europe After The Rain, plus classic album tracks (The Garden, He's A Liquid) and his heavily electronic re-interpretations with Louis Gordon of early Ultravox classics such as My Sex and Hiroshima Mon Amour.

There's also a selection of material from two of Foxx/Gordon's most under-rated albums Shifting City (1997) and The Pleasures Of Electricity (2001), as well as a sample of his ambient material with Harold Budd and the ongoing Cathedral Oceans project, all of which is due for re-release through Edsel in 2009 and 2010. Cities of Light 5 is a new mix which will also be featured on the forthcoming edition of The Pleasures of Electricity.

In addition to Carcrash Flashback from 2006's Sideways and some recent collaborations with Jori Hulkkonen and Metamatics, the new Dub Terror/Karborn mix of Burning Car completes the album, along with the previously unreleased No One Driving (early version) and Plaza (extended).

The album will be widely available although John has signed 50 copies which will be available for pre-order soon on a first come first serve basis through his official shop at Townsend Records - www.townsend-records.co.uk

There is WAY too much re-releasing going on for this artist who, let's face it, is pretty minor.

Thanks for the further details, Scott. I don't think I'll be needing this one, although I would like to have the extended version of Plaza.

That is the one track that sounds interesting, but for all we know it could be some sort of modern take on the song. Guess I'll live without. Boo, hiss. Hope you got the M+M Danseparc reissue. I've learned to like more songs on the album recently...

Tis a great LP as I've always tried to tell you. I'm assuming you have the bonus interview disc as I do but ofcourse I have yet to pop it in. How's the alternate version of Danseparc?

Boys in the Bushes, my new fave album track..., and it only took 10 years.

Do not have the interview disc. I got my single disc freebie from CR, but didn't even know about the bonus disc until later. The alternate version of Danseparc is the standard 12" mix, which you've previously heard on one of my Classic Alternative discs. Nice mix, though is very bongo crazy. I wished there was more bonus material, and that live version of Sins Of Children is tre' unnecessary.

oh dear , barmy ... U are "pretty minor" - not only in this case ! [:p]

fans of foxx will be - once again ! - really happy to finally get ALL his albums from the 80s with lots of bonus trax on cd 2 ! [:)]

concerning the "glimmer" compilation i can only repeat , what i already wrote to the man himself via his myspace site ...

not a bad selection - especially given the great backcatalogue - but i somehow still think that it's a bit pointless to have some songs incl. twice in different versions , when u could actually have much more diverse songs to chose from !?

however ... i would've liked "harmonia mundi" instead of "sunset rising" ( again ) , "in mysterious ways" instead of "he's a liquid" ( again ) , "electrofear" ( beast mix ) by nation 12 instead of "030" , "running in traffic" instead of "no-one driving" ( original ) , "never let me go" instead of "plaza" ( original ) & "ray 1 - ray 2" instead of "burning car" ( original ) , but i suppose that's jus' me & it's already too late to change the tracklisting !? [;)]

---

btw : i've recently got the info that songs from his newer albums like "crash & burn" , "from trash" & "tiny colour movies" not got on this compilation because they are still licensed to a different label / publisher ! *sigh*

If this track listing is correct, I'm psyched that the 12" version of Endlessly is getting a CD release, but am disappointed in not hoaving the 12" of Like a Miracle and Enter the Angels--unless the 'alternate version' of Enter the Angels IS the 12" mix?

I don't have it, but I believe there is. Also, my 12" of Like a Miracle has a 12" version of "A Kind of Wave" as the b-side, and that isn't included in this track listing either. Bummer. They only have so many chances to get these releases right, and when they leave stuff out on expanded versions as these, it doesn't look good for these odds and ends to ever surface on CD.

I agree with a lot that has been said here , I think there was a 12" version of your dress as well , "A kind of wave" was an excellent 12" version (mine was on the b side of the Endlessly 12" I think. Also there was an alternate version of what kind of a girl that was an extra track on one of the double packs. To entice people to buy these re-issues (that already have the ones from a few years ago) I would have thought they would have included all of the outstanding extra tracks of each of the albums
