Blancmange Reissues

Postby Yachtingtype » Fri Aug 08, 2008 8:46 am

That would be great! I am just so happy they are being re-released finally. As nice as it would be to have every single bonus track included, I am not complaining! The 12" mix of "Lose Your Love" is quite lengthy, so I see why they would not include that one. Either way, the bonus tracks that are included are great and I have been playing my Blancmange LP's non-stop this past week.

The sleeve notes say that I Would & Running Thin could not be included over rights issues (presumably with the BBC). No explanation for the non-apperance of the other version of Waves though.

By my reckoning, most of the 7" edits are missing, the original album version of Waves, the Radio 1 Session B-sides, dear ol' Irene & Mavis of course, the German remix of Don't Tell Me, the US 12" Dub of Blind Vision, the What's Your Problem 12", the Lose Your Love 12" (I heard rumours there's 2 of those, a 6 min + and a 10 min + version), the Bonus Beats (ie 12" promo mix) of I Can see It and Your Time Is Over.#13;#10;#13;#10;All that aside, what is there is marvellous, beautifully mastered and a great nostalgia kick.

I believe the 6 min+ version you are referring to is the 12" music video version for the song. I wish the UK 12" Mix of "Don't Tell Me" was included, but what can ya do? I do like the US 12" version, but wasn't that the b-side to "That's Love That Is" 12" Mix?

All, I have just recieved Mange Tout from amazon , I can confirm that the 12" version of dont tell me is not the same as the one on the retro active CD so it maybe the UK (i didnt have that on vinyl. One of the reasons I bought the re-issue is for the extended version of Game above my head (from the waves 12") , I have not compared against my vinyl yet but this extended version does seem different , will check over the weekend

the version of game above is similar to the original but if you imagine the track cut into different sections this alternative mix is just that a rearrangement of the componant sections - great to hear a new version after 1/4 of a century but i prefer the mix i grew up with. also the version of heaven knows . . . is different as it doesn't have the vocal 'sounds' over the music - i guess they pulled the wrong tapes for these two. also there was a second uk mix of that's love that it is which isn't included. at the time the only thing to separate it from the exisitng 12" was a sticker with 'new dance mix' on it. to be fair it was almost the same as the previous version.

This is some of the info I can add based on what I've previously owned:

Happy Families--all the original LP tracks are the same, but Living on the Ceiling fades a couple of seconds earlier than it did on my original pressing of this CD.

Mange Tout--The original CD I had of this album had a version of "The Day Before You Came" that ran 5:50 and was a MUCH different mix than the version on here, which runs 4:26 and is the mix that has appeared on the 'best of', 'second helpings' and 'heaven knows' collections. Even the included 12" mix on the new release is not the same mix as my 5:50 version--I'm not sure if this 5:50 version was on the original vinyl LP because I never owned it on vinyl.

Believe You me--Wow, this one has drastic differences from both my CD and original vinyl LP, which had identical track times. On this new pressing, "Other Animals" has a very different intro and is slightly longer. "No Wonder They Never Made It Back" also runs about 15 seconds longer, as does "John." and "22339" is more than a minute and a half longer!!!

Helping to shed some light on the "Don't Tell Me" versions, this reissue has the same 6:25 mix that I have on a US promo 12" of the track--this version sounds like an extended version of the LP mix, and has that kind of noisy sampled intro. The version on the Retro Active 2 disc is the same mix that was on the b-side of the US 12" of "That's Love That It Is." This mix kicks right into the beat of the song, and has more of a bassy, thumping dance club drum track than the other mix.

Hope that info helps.

Budaniel, I was about to do the same thing!

I have a couple of additions to your observations:

Believe You Me:
22339, is, as you say, about 1:40 on the new CD

No Wonder They Never Made It Back is about 1:00 longer on the new CD
Lose Your Love is about 5 seconds shorter on the new CD, and appears to have a slightly different intro

I Can See It (Extended): About 20 seconds longer on the new CD than on my vinyl rip, but that could just be a turntable speed variation. At first listen, honestly, my vinyl sounds punchier.

Mixing On The Ceiling: I think the version on the CD is about 3 minutes shorter than the vinyl version I had before -- will have to confirm

Side Two is 22339 extended, and the same version from my vinyl rip.

Mange Tout:

Blind Vision (Long Version) is the same 9:40/9:39 length as the version on my Canadian "Second Helpings" (CSH from now on) original pressing CD

The Day Before You Came: Same observation as Budaniel; the new 4:26 version even sounds a little faster to me on a quick comparison

Game Above My Head (Long Version) is the same as CSH, but the mixing sounds slightly different

That's Love That It Is: "Remix" on the new CD = "Extended Remix Version" from Retro:Active 5, and is about 30 seconds longer than the mix on CSH. "Extended" on the new CD = my mix from the 12".

Vishnu: The new CD has a 5:21 mix; the Platinum Collection CD has a 4:45 mix.

Happy Families:
Feel Me (Extended Version) is identical to CSH

I haven't pulled out the vinyl to get EXTRA picky, but where's "Your Time Is Over?" (As Gary said earlier in the thread. I would have given up an instrumental mix of Vishnu for that, but it's available on the Platinum Collection CD.

That's it for tonight. Hope it makes us all feel smarter :).

The track timings and stuff for the three remastered albums have been listd at http://www.discogs.com/artist/Blancmange if you want to compare.

Hmm, the community at Discogs have even noted the variations in the remixes [:)].

mojowkn, thanks for pointing out the Lose Your Love difference. In fact, the mixes are completely different! Listen to the opening drum tracks after the two very different intros, and you'll see the longer version on the original pressing has harder snare hits periodically.

I just listened to the reissue of Mange Tout and was very disappointed in the sound. No bottom end. Anyone else have it?

Just received mine today and haven't listened yet. But I did rip it and looked at the waveform. Unlike Thompson Twins' Into the Gap, the levels have NOT been jacked up!
