I posted this in the General section, but I guess it makes more sense here:

From hitsdailydouble.com:

More than 100 previously unavailable albums from the wicked-cool, fondly remembered catalog of I.R.S. Records will be made available in digital form by Capitol. Among these treasures are LPs from The Fleshtones, Wall of Voodoo, Concrete Blonde, Oingo Boingo, Stewart Copeland, Robbie Krieger and, of course, Skafish. A digital campaign will highlight each new addition as it becomes available, according to a press release from Capitol’s catalog division. When the rollout is complete, the entire catalog of the Miles Copeland-founded proto-indie will be exist in digital formats.

I'm sure the musicians will enjoy losing the ability to collect any royalties from this stuff.

If they offered a lossless compression option, that may be cool. But I expect it will be lossy MP3's. Not very exciting... Besides, I will always prefer physical media, even if it means I'm just going to stuff it into my iPod. Call me old fashioned, but I still like to buy CD's.

Thanks for the post rewind. I agree with Rubellan and harleytexas...cd reissues still grab my attention, whereas I have a hard time getting excited about reissues for download only. As a matter of fact, I have purchased more used cds then ever as of late. Some of the Seattle's 2nd hand stores are doing great business in used cds right now...check out a recent article in the music section at www.seattleweekly.com if interested.

Regardless, it's cool to see Capitol at least digging the stuff out of the vaults.

I don't know anyone who buys downloads. Who is actually dropping 99 cents a pop (or whatever) on downloads?

*lol*

fyi : u might be called "ol' fashioned" , if u still prefer good ol' vinyl releases , like i do , but buying cds ONLY to "stuff" its music into your i-pod after that is jus' retarded in my honest opinion ! [}:)]
i mean ... isn't faqin' i-tunes simply made for buying downloads online & then "stuff it into your i-pod" , eh ? [;)]
some people obviously didn't get the idea behind music downloads methinks ! [:p]

I have nothing against downloads. I just am not aware of anyone actually paying for them.

The point is I don't like iTunes telling me to type of compression I'm going to get. For the iPod I use Apple Lossless compression. Essentially, it's compression without lossy side effects but with much larger file sizes. I also like to "tweak" every song before it goes into the iPod (surprising, I know), and you can't really do that with pre-compressed downloaded files, at least not without adding additional loss. I currently have just over 2000 songs on my iPod and that amounts to over 50GB, but it's still not even half full. I still want physical media because I like the artwork, as well as having a hard copy back up. CD-R's die after several years, which I'm finding out the hard way.

this means that quite a few ( more ) of those songs are less than 320 kbps quality then ... hm ...

that's why i still buy especially albums in vinyl format whenever possible ... & u sometimes even get a cd copy for free with them these days ! [;)]

I'm with most of the people on here. Buying a digital file is like paying for air in my opinion. Not to mention that it isn't CD quality sound. I simply have too many CDs and vinyl to ever cram on to an ipod (I stopped trying to keep count after I passed 10,000 pieces about 5 years ago).

I use my ipod at work and when I'm on the go, but when I'm at home, I play my actual physical media on an actual real stereo system with an equalizer that lets me completely control the sound quality--not boxed in by any preset, predetermined equalizer settings like they use today.

This is one of those things I've heard over and over - it's just not true. The same thing was said about cd's in the beginning; that they would fall apart and lose their information - did not happen. I have cd-r's going back more than 10 years without any loss of content or quality. There was a few companies in the UK that had pressing issues in the 80's that caused skips and distortion - but that was the exception. As for downloads - worthless and you generally pay the same when buying full albums.

I've found that cdr's can be of varying quality. My very first batch (Circuit City disks, 2001) have never had any problems. However, some newer batches (from well known companies!) have been a little more iffy. Some won't record at all, and others will only play on certain players, but don't like my car stereo.

I know there were problems in the early days, but haven't heard anything about issues since. It's like anything though, if you buy cheap prodcut, you're gonna get poor quality. The Memorex "cool colors" 48X/700MB/80 min cd-r's are top notch! They aren't the cheapest, but if you want to get a quality burn, to keep for good, they can't be beat.
