you crack me up. i don't know what it is: your smugness? the self-righteous tone in most of your posts? your assumption that anyone who doesn't do things like you do is an idiot?
whatever it is, it WORKS! keep it up, i get such eye-rolling pleasure out of your snide posts.

"i don't know anyone who buys downloads." HA HA HA HA! it just drips off the screen, your contempt. and i'm not surprised that you don't know one of the millions of people who DO buy downloads. i don't suppose you actually know many people at all.

Look, if wanna throw your money away on something that doesn't really exist, and enjoy listening to a fourth generation copy-of-a-copy - than knock yourself out! His point is that downloads have no value and sound like crap. That's just the truth and the well deserved backlash has already begun.

I've been having problems with my CD recorder--and I have a LOAD of new new wave vinyl to burn thanks to discoveries on his message board (thanks everyone for all the awareness of lost gems). I had a package of Memorex CDRs, and only about every 4th CD worked (I had to throw out MOST of a pack of 50 CDs). I though my recorder, which is over 7 years old, might be dying, but in researching new recorders, I found many people in their reviews were having the SAME problem with Memorex. So I researched different brands of recordable music CDs, and found the SAME complaints about Memorex, which is the only brand Best Buy seems to have in Music CDRs. So i have to find TDK or Sony somewhere else and see if they work any better.

*lol*

your postings are even funnier than those by barmy ! [:D]

are u seriously saying that everything that is stored only in digital format on harddisks etc. "doesn't really exist" [?]

fyi : EVERYTHING - incl. downloads or other digital only stuff - has the value that U - the person that owns it - actually assign or attribute to it ! [;)]
in other words : it may have indeed NO VALUE for u , but can have quite a lot of value for somebody else then ! [:)]
if u can't or won't respect that , why the faq are u here in the 1st place , as your humble existence on this board is ONLY due to digital data , stored on some harddisks after all ! [;)]

my suggestion for your "digital future" therefore is this : better think twice before u post / act again , will u ?
THANX ! [}:)]

Whatever works for everyone is fine, but the whole thing about music for music collectors is the great feeling you get when you acquire that piece you've been hunting for for years. I remember when the 12" version of "Around my Dream" by Silver Pozolli was basically discontinued from the day it was released in the 80s, I was destitute over not getting a copy--and the day I was browsing through every bin at a record store in San Francisco in 2001--a coast away from my home--and found a copy! I almost screamed out loud, nearly had a heart attack, and had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming. Of course, within a matter of years, it turned up on an Italo Disco CD collection. But to this day, when I'm flipping through my records or CDs, I get giddy when i see the things I have, cover art, liner notes and all. That's just not something you get from a download--I download songs that simply aren't released in hard format at all out of desperation, but they just don't have the value to me that my records and CDs have. To me, they feel like a last resort, and those tracks stay on my list of things I hope to someday find released on CD. And movies are going the same way. Everything just seems so disposable, like all these art forms are not going to be cherished in years to come. I mean, what are we heading towards? Recording artists getting awarded cyber Platinum MP3s? It simply can't feel the same for the artists to not have their ALBUMS as something they can actually hold in their hands.

Anything that is available in MP3 can be accessed for free with minimal effort. Do people really pay 99 cents to download a song?
I'm with most of the people on here. Buying a digital file is like paying for air in my opinion. Not to mention that it isn't CD quality sound
I doubt any of you could tell the difference between a 320 kbps MP3 and a CD track. If you can you have a special talent and should be in ths same business as Rubellan.
People also often imagine hearing differences between, say, a Audio CD and an MP3 coming from this CD, just because knowing that they are listening to an MP3 disturbs them. When the test is blind, the listener doesn't know if he is listening to a CD or an MP3, so he can't tell that the MP3 sounds bad just because he doesn't like MP3. It can only tell it if it does sound bad.

I guess it depends on where you listen to your music once you've downloaded it. If you listen to it only on your ipod or computer, everything sounds okay. But I have listened to burned CDs of MP3s in my car or home stereo, and it does indeed at times sound sort of like a Phil Spector 'wall of sound'. individual instruments and sounds don't always jump out as clearly as on a CD, and stereo separation is a little muddy IMO--just like you can totally tell the difference between the sound on a CD and a mint piece of vinyl. The vinyl is usually much fuller and 'warmer' than a CD.
But I have listened to burned CDs of MP3s in my car or home stereo,
I've also burned MP3 CD's that sound lousy in my car stereo, but the same CD sounds freakin' awesome through my home system and really high quality studio headphones. I'm not an audio expert but I'm wondering if the hardware/software piece that decodes the MP3 information or maybe the quality of the DAC is to blame in some cases.

do you have a band equalizer on your home system? For me, that really helps make even burned MP3 CDs sound better, although I hate that I have to change my preferred setting which works fine across the board on all standard

CDs. I also started to distinguish the difference when I'd read reviews on amazon about reissues where guys would complain about compression for the MP3/ipod crowd that ruins all the dynamics of the original---when I bought reissues because of bonus tracks, I started to compare the new 'remasters' to my original pressings and totally could tell immediately what the reviewers were talking about. For example, when I rebought the Joshua Tree, I compared Blue Sky (one of my favorite songs on the album), and while the new CD was much louder, the original CD sounded so much more crisp--you could really hear distinct instruments better.

What? Look, downloads have ruined the music experience for generations to come. There are people who have NO idea what liner notes are, cover art, lyric sheets - the joy of holding a record cover in your hand while watching it spin on the turntable. More disturbing is the fact that most young consumers think that music should be free! Vinyl sales are up, cds have stabilized and downloads won't kill either format. As for "actual value", if you think your download is worth as much as my album or cd, continue to delude yourself. If what you say is true, why are people on ebay paying insane amounts of money to buy hard copies of out-of-print music, when they can buy the download for $9.99? You're argument is as thin as an MP3....

@ snack : if u would've read jus' a few of my previous comments here , u would've realized that i LOVE the good ol' vinyl stuff too & that cover art , liner notes , lyrics etc. ONLY makes sense to me , if i could actually enjoy them in a format that is @ least 7" big or better 10" or 12" ! [;)]
in a 5" cd booklet cover art etc. usually ALWAYS looks way too "squeezed" for my taste & if i want to read the lyrics in such booklets i mostly need some ( magnifying ) glasses , because they are printed in such a small font sometimes that it really hurts my eyes ! *sigh*
so for me it's either vinyl - for the better sound quality & cover art presentation - or a digital format like a 320 kbps mp3 file , if i only want to listen to the music wherever i go , as i also don't like to carry bags of cds with me in such cases ! [;)]

of course NO digital format ( incl. cds ! ) is as much worth as a vinyl rec. - no matter , what some people may claim !

but - to come back to the original topic of this thread - i very much welcome the fact that irs rec. will release quite a lot of their ol' catalogue as downloads now , as i rather get some of that stuff as a simple download than not @ all ! [:)]
if u can't or jus' won't appreciate that , then it's your loss & not mine ! [:p]

well ... people who pay an "insane amount of money" @ ebay or wherever else , jus' to get , what they could also get for much less as a download are indeed insane in my honest opinion & i would NEVER EVER pay such ridiculously steep prices to make those greedy assholes of sellers happy only to get a maybe even scratched copy of a favorite release on vinyl or cd !

i'm sorry , but i'm NOT that stupid ! [}:)]

btw : i totally agree with what swampthing has posted here before me ! [8D]
