U2 - No Line on the Horizon, first thoughts

U2 - No Line on the Horizon, first thoughts

Postby DJ Lestat » Fri Feb 20, 2009 12:50 am

I got my hands on this a couple days ago and have had time to spin in about 5 times and its really growing on me.
There are several standout tracks:
Magnificent is my fav so far!
Unknown Caller
I'll go crazy
Fez-Being Born

The album almost has a Joshua Tree feel to it in that the "non single" tracks are very soulful and have alot if "feeling" to them.

I think they are streaming the album on their MySpace today for you guys wanting to hear it.

Hi,
I've listened to this album a couple of times and IMHO this is nothing more than warmed up U2-soup.
Yes, Magnificent is a great U2 song but even that is sooo predictable.
These guys are taking the (clever) piss and are gonna make of fortune out of it.
And the press are going to love this album of course because it's U2.
You know, it's like with the BMW 5-series. No matter what it looks like, people are going to buy it because it's the 5-series. Same thing here, no matter how crappy the new U2 album is, people are going to buy it and say that they love it.

They'll be the musical guests on David Letterman March 2-6, to plug the album.

it's a shame that "mercy" isn't released on the new album or @ all ( officially , of course [;)] ) by now !

"get on your boots" is indeed total crap - especially as a single , sorry ! [}:)]
what were they thinking [?]

i think it's the worst album they've ever done, period. it blows. they've been my favorite band for nearly 30(!) years and i've defended them even through mediocre offerings like pop, zooropa, rattle & hum and the passengers thing they did with eno. those all had, imho, at least some decent stuff on them. 'no line on the horizon' really doesn't. the only song i think is bearable on the new album is 'magnificent', but the lyrics are awful. the rest of the album sucks musically and lyrically. at best, to me it sounds like demos of stuff that didn't make it onto the other two albums they've issued this decade, and i don't mean that as a compliment. i knew this day would come eventually - that they really, really jump the shark - it seems to happen to every good band that plays the game long enough. i wish they would've called it a day on the last album and gone out on a high note. oh well. at least the reissues they've done so far are great.

sounds like a cross between the Escape Club Wild Wild West in some parts and Alice in Chains in the main chorus and little bit of Vertigo from their last record

i'd like to be optimistic and think it will grow on me over time like some of their other stuff, but i don't think it's going to happen this time. i think the album is a real dud unfortunately.

i don't like things that don't sound like things i already know. that's why i only ever listen to music from the 1980's and hate everything new that 80's artists do. and i hate what's on the radio right now, even if i haven't heard it, i reject it outright. i hate experimentation, i hate to be challenged, and especially i hate to be entertained. if it can't be fraught with portent and call up feelings in me from when i was at my best and most tortured, dressed like johnny slash from square pegs in 1983, i don't like it. i reject it! why can't things just stay the same? why can't it always be "unforgettable fire"? why is my hair falling out, why do i have crow's feet? why am i so unhappy on the cusp of 40? why can't we all just return to ridgemont high, and be gnarly and tubular again? WHY?
