Ministry - With Sympathy Re-issue +3 (8/12/08)

Postby tenohtwo » Mon Sep 29, 2008 6:53 am

Twitched might be one of the better Ministry boots out there. I like the 7" mix of The Angel (the drums start right up in the beginning), and the inclusion of Abortive with the white noise intro (this song was written for Twitch, but ended up on Rape and Honey). If you ever want to hear the 'sonic cousin' to Twitch, track down Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System (Nettwerk Records). It contains several samples and beats used on Twitch and the song "M.O.V.E" (which is another version of the Ministry demo "Move" from Early Trax). The Tackhead album makes you realize how much Adrian Sherwood's production is heard on Twitch.

Anyone have any info on the possibility of this still being issued sometime in the near future?

I hope this still happens too. Anyone with any news. Al's retired, he probably won't care anymore.

Sony decided to deny American Beat's request for the package, so it's not coming, unless they give the rights to another label.

Hi Surly,

Did Sony mention why? Are they going to release it themselves?

Not sure. My friend used to head up American Beat, and he was dealing with them directly. He's no longer with the label; it's now a part of Collector's Choice. He had only told me that they had approval initially, but then Sony pulled it once American Beat moved to Infinity/Collector's Choice.

The thing is I don't recall WS ever going out of print. It has always been available. No matter how much Al damned the record, people still bought it...and a lot of the people who bought WS are fans of Taste and Psalm 69 as well. If Al's the one making a fuss, I think he's doing it to oblige his image and WS will be reissued with extra trax sooner or later.

Actually, I don't believe it has been in print for years. I've seen it in the used cd bins here and there, but not very often.

You're probably right, actually. I'm going by memories of record store browsing. I do remember seeing WS "new" at the same time I was debating whether or not to buy "TwitchED." However, that doesn't mean the manufacturer was still pressing new copies. BTW, I never bought "TwitchED." Whoever put that bogus issue out didn't do some basic research--like the fact that Paul Barker wasn't in the band in the 'Twitch' period!

I think it went out of print the same time as the Ice House "Icehouse" US version which is so much better than the Aussie release. I remember seeing those two cd's everywhere I go at a budget price and then they just weren't around any more.

It's amazing--this CD was ALL over the place in the late 80s, every record store you went into--If I'd known it was going to become a rare collectible, I would have bought 10 copies.

You mean the photo on the back cover? That photo is used a few times in the booklet, and is actually the only photo they seem to have! I don't think Alain even looked like that during that period.

Anyways, the bio/history of Ministry (written by some dude named James Plummer) doesn't mention Barker being in the band until 1988, although it says that they met in 1982.

(edit// went a bit crazy using "photo"!)

It might very well be as early as 1982. Barker's band The Blackouts (from Seattle, not to be confused with the garage rock band from Illinois)had an EP "The Lost Souls Club" released on Wax Trax in 1985. Ministry had already released the "Cold Life" 12" on WT, so that might be the connection.

When Al met his first wife, Patty, she was managing The Blackouts, so yeah, Al likely met Barker and Rieflin back in the WS days. If anyone hasn't heard The Blackouts, they fit right into the early 80's post-punk sound, with the Lost Souls Club 12" having more of that Wax Trax sound to it. Definitely worth checking out.

I ordered a lot of Wax Trax records back in the day, and I gotta tell you, The Blackouts was definitely...one of them.
