12"/80s...?

yeah. the recently released Grand 12 Inches 6 was 4-discs worth of disappointment for the most part, and here we're going to get another 3. Not sure how these compilers think they're going to make money if they keep rehashing the stuff. They need to actually WORK and do some research...message boards are loaded with wish lists from the people who would actually purchase these compilations.

Indeed - have to wait and see I guess!
Personally I actually quite like the look of the tracklisting and that's quite a sexy sleeve!

Although I share the disappointment with some of these tracklistings, people are under the wrong impression that these releases are aimed at people like us who frequent message boards and the like, they're not. They're aimed at the impulse buyer (with some 80s nostalgia), and have been very successful in that respect, sales-wise.

I don't agree with that. I think the numerous generic 80s collections with Mickey, Down Under, Jessie's Girl, Eternal Flame, Too Shy, Der Kommisar, Don't You Forget About Me, etc, etc, are aimed towards impulse buyers, and many times, even get advertising on television.

Collections like this, filled with rare extended versions, are not for impulse buyers. Nor are the song selections. While WE know most of these songs and many of them have appeared on other extended version collections, a majority of these songs are not familiar to your average listener who grew up in the 80s listening to pop radio and watching MTV.

Yep - most people into 80s music would still be fairly unfamiliar with half of this tracklisting - but these 12"/80s comps have nearly always historically contained a mix of the well known and rarer tracks - I think thats why they're quite popular and have spawned others of their ilk....

With the exception of a few songs, disc 2 is a total waste of time.

All a matter of opinion I guess - if you like Electro/Hip Hop (as I do!), Disc 2 is pretty brilliant IMHO! [;)]

I have stopped expecting anything rare from these compilations. The only thing that could be considered uncommon on Disc 1 and Disc 3 is probably Einstein A Go Go - if it is the 12" version that appeared only once afaik on another compilation CD before. Strange the AON track is not Close-Up but Close (To The Edit) which is the title of the 7" version.

Not sure about Disc 2 coz it's not really my cup of tea

Pointless release. We want mixes that have only appeared on vinyl and not mixes that have been on loads of other compilation albums. I have the first one of this series and in the sleevenotes they went on about how Blue Monday wasn't on it because it was on everything else well talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks the second disc looks total rubbish as well.

Think that's a tiny bit unfair seeing the first one was about 6 years and 6 Volumes of 12"/80s ago, don't you think? I'd say as a direct result of the popularity of this series, more record companies have been releasing 12" compilations and putting 12" bonus tracks on studio album reissues, making it pretty difficult to now release a commercially viable (with major artists) compilation with rare/unavailable on CD mixes, when before, there was a dearth of these mixes on CD.

There is a ton of rare unavailable stuff by major artists that still needs to make it to CD. Some very easy research by the record company would reveal how many of the tracks proposed here have been available on CD so many times before.

But it can be very difficult to license 12" mixes for reissue. I believe the guys who (used to?) run Superfectura wrote a post here on how unreasonably difficult it could be to license extra tracks and 12" mixes for CD.

Also, I don't imagine the masters for 12" singles are easy to find, I don't think remixes were a very high priority for most record labels. I suspect that vinyl rips are going to have to do for most 12" mixes.

But why do record companies put out the same 80s compilations over + over? All they do if shuffle the tracks and change the cover.

There is a lot of material that has never made it on to cd.

As for the 12/80 release - I never heard of many of the tracks + will probably get it out of curiousity.

Hoping that future releases will include stuff like "beds are burning" etc.

I wouldn't think the Relax Version by FGTH on this comp is what it states is used in the Virgin Ad. If this comp states it's the NY mix, then it is wrong, the version used on the ad is the b side instrumental of the relax 12" not the NY Mix.

I would be astounded if they put the instrumental version on this. It would help if they updated their website to let us know what actual mixes are being used i suppose.
