my Stock Aitken Waterman reissue hopes on CD

my Stock Aitken Waterman reissue hopes on CD

Postby budaniel » Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:07 am

With recent reissues of Mandy Smith, Sinitta, Lonnie Gordon and Princess, as well as others already mentioned here on the board, there are two SAW productions I'm dying to have on CD that haven't ever appeared on CD yet, as far as I know. I'm hoping for a reissue of Sigue Sigue Sputnik's album with the 12" mix of "Success" on it (my absolute favorite song by them), as well as a reissue of Deborah Harry's "Rockbird" with the full 12" mix of the SAW produced rerecording of "In Love with Love." I'm pretty sure neither of these tracks has ever appeared on CD.

Actually In Love With Love appeared as a (PWL edit) on the "Most Of All - The Best Of Deborah Harry" compilation from 1999.

The remixes of "Success" are available as MP3 downloads (Amazon/iTunes/etc.) In fact, it appears nearly the entire catalogue is available for download.

thanks for the info, but I'm a strictly physical format. I'll keep my vinyl until the day it appears on CD.

I see your hopes are slightly different to mine; mine were for the PWL archive to be greatly damaged in a fire, ah well.

I'm generally in agreement, but in this case I don't think you should hold out for a CD; doesn't look like that will ever happen.

It seems the new strategy, at least for EMI and their digital distribution division, Caroline World Service Catalog, is to open up their vaults and make as much as they can available for download. There are some real gems finally available after being long out of print or never before on CD. And the beauty is, these will now be available forever.

I suggest purchasing downloads from a site like Think Indie. They have them at 320kbps. And they have all the artwork handy. You can make your own CD's -- it's about as much as you can hope for.

Wow. Here's one I didn't know about. I have two mixes of "Say It Again" by Danse Society on two different new wave compilations, so I was trying to figure out which I liked better and wanted to put on my ipod. I was also trying to figure out the names of the mixes, so I looked on discogs--it turns out this track was produced by none other than Stock Aitken and Waterman. Would never have expected SAW and Danse Society to collaborate.

Meanwhile, as much as I despise a majority of the output by supposed new wave artist like REM, Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Joe Jackson, I wish no ill will towards their achives because they mean something very special to other people, and that's fine.

budaniel,

Why are you so suprised that a "producer" would have his hands in different genres of music? Mutt Lange produced the Cars "Heartbreak City" after producing all those hard rock records for AC/DC and Def Leppard, then went on to produce for a bunch of lame contemporary artists.

*Most* of what SAW produced was late 80's british teen-pop, am I correct? The modern day equivilent would be Brintney Spears for god sakes.

Quote from wikipedia:
"As the epitome of creating very popular teen-pop music, the trio were often satirised or criticised. For example, the British newspaper The Guardian described them as "Schlock, Aimless and Waterdown" (similar variations on their name included "Stop Aitken Waterman!","Lock,Stock and Barrel" and "Shock, Ache and Water Torture"[citation needed]). Comedy group Morris Minor and the Majors' parodied the Stock, Aitken and Waterman style on This is the Chorus, specifically referencing Kylie Minogue's hit song "I Should Be So Lucky" as well as Mel and Kim's "Respectable"."

You prefer SAW stuff over Joe jackson, Elvis Costello, brave and bold statement, each to their own I guess.........

This is the Chorus is a good parody of the SAW style of music and deserved a better fate than it received. The flip side to 'Stutter Rap', 'Another Boring B-side' is funny as well and as for the "Japanese" version of 'This is the Chorus', well.. [:D]

Elvis Costello turns my blood cold, who could even remotely love that droning flat voice.
