list of new wave artists

Postby CounterCircular » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:04 am

No new wave discussion would be complete without mentioning the great dance club beat of Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson with Ebony and Ivory. Owning both the 7" and 12" versions makes my new wave collection roar.

I know this is a 'New Wave' list, but is there a 'Nu Wave' list?

"This list has been approved by wikipedia users."
"Aka, anyone who wants to join in"

So, Comsats are there, though i'm assuming the
mid-80's stuff, but no Chameleons and no Sound,
not that i'd call them New Wave.

The person who comes up with *the* list will still
be wrong, because the lines blur too much. Argue 'til
you're blue in the face and you'll still lose.

There's gotta be at least 500 more acts that should been mentioned on that list for pete's sake.

You're damn right. I guess wiki users are not aware of almost 500 bands that MUST be on the list. Looking at letter B, I see no Blue Peter or Boys Brigade. Well when Mr. Mister is considered new wave, why or why Survivor did not make it on the list? [:D]
Ah yes...the list...note the lack of many post-punk/college rock/indie bands on this list...

Joy Division, Killing Joke, Sad Lovers and Giants, Section 25, Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio, REM, The Smiths, Kraftwerk...not here...

This is such a random list with many omissions...but definitive it is not...
Kraftwerk are NOT New Wave. They emerged way before even punk rock began. For New Wave you are looking at bands who emerged betweeen 77 and 83 mainly.
VERY aware of this fact...they are Electronic, originally lumped in with Krautrock (Can, etc) and a major heritage/influencer - in the same vein as Bowie, Roxy, Iggy, Velvets, etc. - an act whose influence is so strong it is criminal not to mention them. You will find that many on these boards are Kraftwerk fans...

If you went by the list of groups above.....Belouise Some should NOT be talked about at all, because they're not "new wave", which goes against the premise of this board. Also, bands like Mission UK and Cabaret Voltaire, and of course, Ministry are not now, not then, "New wave" they're goth. They too, should not be talked about then here ever.......see how ridiculous this whole "you cant talk about so and so b/c they're not new wave" is? I would imagine, over half the bands we talk about here, be it new releases or whatever, wouldn't be considered "new wave", therefore, shouldnt be talked about here.

If you get all butt hurt over talks about: Rick Astley/and the like, then you should about others as well, it's not a "well so and so is...but so and so arent" thing. You cant have it both ways.
ps if you search Billboard magazine on google books, you can find lots of references to new wave even in the mid 1980s. I think any attempt to narrow the "new wave" genre is futile. There is no logical argument why the B52s are new wave but Talking Heads aren't. It is crazy.
Exactly!!! All the "synthpop/new romantic/new wave/post punk/etc" talk is just that. They're ALL some form of new wave/synthpop, so, why not talk about them here? they're all subgenre's of new wave IMO, we're so worried about who is and who isn't, who cares really? I dont. I dont post here to see who is and who isnt "new wave" if I like a band, I'll post on it, or post a new release/info on bands I know others here might like. Some, I might not, some YOU might not, who cares really? we're all herte for the same common purpose: we all love "new wave" and all it's subgenres, thats why this place exists.

Lets worry more about getting news out there, or talking about bands more, than who is/isnt "new wave"? We can make this place even better IMO, then it is already.

I like Rick Astleys 1 record...doesnt that mean Im a huge fan? no. To the uneducated/casual music fan, he might be considered "new wave", to all of us, he might not be. Does that mean he's right, or wrong? no. That might be his favorite atist, and you've all shit on him, b/c he's not your cup of tea? The point behind the news on these folks , is to get the word out about them, and supporting them, I will do. I'd rather support a Rick Astley/HL&TN, and so many more, than alot of the garbage on the radio now.

Lets try to keep that in mind, next time we go slagging off some artist. There's no "cool list" or no rule stating we all must like who you, or I like...we like who we like.....just be cool.

Look how much shit you folks give that person who likes Toyah? I picked up one of her cd's..she's ok...nothing great. Thats my opinion. I wont get rid of the cd, but who are you or I to say who someone should or shouldnt like? You wouldnt like it(which is proof here with all of these threads about it), if someone told you you couldnt like so and so, or "they're not new wave". Who really gives a crap? I dont and neither should any of you.

I catch alot of crap for being a Morrissey/Smiths fan, does that mean, tomorrow Im going to the record store and dumping off my growing S/M collection? nope. Just means Ill continue liking them, and you will not.

Calm down.

People are just voicing their opinions DJP, that's all.

As for mine, I always felt that Cabaret Voltaire were industrial rather than goth.

are you serious???????? talking heads and teardrops explodes are pefect examples of new wave. remember new wave is best identified as a period in music history not a musical style.

why not read this history from this very site:

...no need to read history...i'm 50, thus being part of it...who were considered "new wave" then (in europe)? Joe Jackson, Motors, B52s, Devo, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Monochrome Set etc...or simply, all "out of punk movement, but nowhere close to post-punk"...despite respectible authors, too many of them emerged on the surface just "using punk tide"...

I presume that Julian Cope and David Byrne wouldn't be happy with your classification...

DJ Phoenix,

No ones telling anyone who and not who to like. We have an area on NWO called "—Not Necessarily New Wave—" where people can post about Rick Astley or Sebastian Bach for that matter, these are clearly acts that are not sub-genres and/or under the very, very large, broad umbrella that is tho focus of New Wave Outpost. For example I really, really like Iron Maiden, but I wouldn't go to the NWO forums to post about their latest reissue or concert tour. Why? Out of respect of it's members and charter. It would be a very trollish thing to do.

This is true Swamp Thing but (and I'm playing Devil's Advocate here) this is a reissue section - the words New Wave don't appear in its sub-forum title. Any more than they appear, f'rinstance, in the Marketplace section. But if someone posted in the Not Necessarily New Wave section that they wanted to flog their Rick Astley CDs (and who could blame them) they'd be told to go there to do it because that's the part of this forum to sell things. So under that same 'deal' if people want to pass on news about late 80s SAW and related artists, this seems to be the right place o do so, going by the name of the sub-forum.
