"Jack FM" Radio kicks off in LA with "Whip It'!

Yup, Devo! My favorite oldies station, 93.1 Arrow FM, in LA has changed to some sort of "Jack FM" format. This is a radio format that plays 70's to todays music, including plenty of 80's new wave hits.

I'm kind of liking it right now, but the jury is still out. Of course, it won't knock the fantastic Indie 103.1 out of the number one position on the car dial. Interestingly, this format was created by Kevin Weatherly, a former KROQ program director, maybe that's why "Whip It" started the new format.

It seemed to me like it was only a matter of time until a radio (non-satellite) integrated the 80's with the 70's. It's kind of an Ipod station and it almost mirrors my teenage son's MP3 playlists. It seems like XM and Sirius are going in one direction and commerical FM in another in terms of stations.

Anyway, what do you guys and girls that live in LA/OC (or Dallas) think of this new format?

I live in an area near LA, so I'll have to give it a listen. I grew up listening to KROQ(although I didn't listen as much when they started playing so much grunge in the nineties). I listened to Arrow for awhile. The new format sounds like a good one,

Going up here in the sf san jose bay area when I was going up I would listen for hours to the quake at 98.9 in the early 80's than later to Live 105.3 up to mid 90's until they fired alex bennett than everything went download hill from there at Live 105.

There is a station that recently popped up here in Albuquerque--well, actually, it replaced a gross, tasteless "hip-hop" station--called Fred FM, and their jingo is that they play anything they feel like. So it's got an eclectic mix of 70s, 80s, and 90s,

Live-105 changed format recently to reflect a "classic alternative" approach mixed in with the New Wave revival and some indie rock. Since they don't stream, I don't know what they're like but you might want to check it out. I liked Channel 104.9, too. I

Radio stations seem to be jumping all over this name game recently. BOB, DAVE, JACK and MAX stations have been quietly springing up across the country. But the best so far is JOHNSON 970 AM in Portland, Oregon an all-comedy station. At least JACK FM's

We have a JACK FM in Toronto that started out very retro/80's friendly and now sadly they play more 70's rock...

In Salt Lake, Simmons radio dumped a nice new wave radio station, firing all of the dj's without warning, and started a "Jack FM" station declaring it to be "it" in radio. Frankly, the changeover is a loss to the Salt Lake airwaves.
