"New Wave" forever

Postby DevoManiac101 » Thu Feb 09, 2006 11:02 am

Hello gang!

I was wondering how many people here married someone with the same musical interests?

For those who didn't, did your new wave musical influences rub off on your spouse?

And just one more question, do you think it's best to be with someone who doesn't share the same musical interests? perhaps it would be more fun to get somebody into that type of music oppose to someone already knowing it.

Thank you

In the end it truly doesn'r matter since I can realte to many different forms of music although New Wave is way at the top....

Having said that my wife thinks New Wave is a surfing term........

I did not marry someone with similar musical tastes, and my new wave influences did not rub off on my spouse. She only recognizes the songs I play all the time. [V]

Mrs. scramjet likes new wave, but she's neither nostalgic nor a collector - two of the traits that propel my new wave interest. I can remember a song I heard once 25 years ago (but often can't remember where I put my car keys). Mrs. scramjet can hear a song three times in a week and not remember it. I guess people's brains work differently.

My wife listens to all types of music, but even though she grew up listening to 91X (my favorite station of all time), she can take or leave new wave. She says she enjoys new wave when I play it.

Only to the extent that I think she's amused when I play a quirky song that she'd long since forgotten.

I think it's a very minor issue. If you're talking marriage, there are many other key issues to be brought up. OTOH, it's fun to wax nostalgic and keep the 80's memories alive. As much as I love hearing or recalling all the unknown or forgotten new wave music, my wife has no desire to do so.

It never before even occured to me to go out with someone who wasn't into punk or new wave. My wife is into both. We've rubbed off on eachother in that some of the particular bands that I'm into she now listens to and vice versa (I got her into NoMeansNo, she got me into The Damned, etc) but as far as style goes, that was a given before we even went out.

All we did in the early days was go to shows or clubs and stuff. I wouldn't even know what to do for fun with someone who wasn't into the same scene. We've got kids now, so we spend most of our time at home, but just this Christmas I got her a Bauhaus DVD and she got me 'The Truth About De-evolution' on DVD.

I never married, but it is interesting how me and my not boyfriend (long story) influence each other musically. His tastes in music are as weird as mine, but different. Right now he's going through a Speed Metal phase. He HATES HATES HATES new wave but has turned me on to some cool jazz and whatnot. He said he's willing to check out Kate Bush but I haven't sprung her on him yet. So to answer your question I think it would be better to marry someone who's musical tastes are different. Whole new worlds of discovery, ya dig?

Yeah, and when you break up she won't steal your music. That approach has allowed my music collection to stay virtually intact going six girlfriends back. The last time I was with a girl with good musical taste was in 1993, and she took a s--tload of my old school soul records when we broke up.

I met a girl once that had my exact musical taste and it was beautiful until we started getting competitive with what we trying to get from our want list. It then got really ugly fast and we couldn't talk to each other anymore. I'm sticking with someone that someone likes my music but she doesn't have to be really into it. [:)]

I had to reply to this topic. Music is such a big part of my life, and I am the total New Wave dude. My Wife of three plus years is big 80's fan, but was more into the like of Prince, George Michael and the pop side of things. I'll never forget the first time we met for a "date" at a karaoke bar. It was more of a rendevous, like I'll see you out there. After walking her back to her car, she invited me in because she so desperately had to play a song for me.
She put in a cassette tape of Violator and played "World In My Eyes" by Depeche Mode. I was DONE right there. After one of the most passionate make-out sessions of my life, the rest is history.

We're now in a band together. www.roar84.com
We still have different tastes, and a lot of comonality.

LOL at you scramjet! That's cute, and close to what I'd say anyway.

My husband is not "into" new wave at all, but he listens to it when I have it on, and can appreciate some of it. (He's a major big Police fan, actually). Some of the more synthy stuff, like OMD or Depeche Mode, he'll roll his eyes at. And he teases me about Duran Duran, but above point by DevoManiac is interesting. Re: I think it's important that you both be into music. My hubs certainly is! And he's gotten me into some great music, too. When we take a road trip together, for example, we always agree on a swell--and varied--musical collection. I think it's important that you're both into music, even if it's different types. Unless, I guess, one of you HATES the other's music.

I'm not married and I'm so far from being it... but I can talk from the perspective of seeing my mum and dad. They both like a certain group of bands (Led Z., Pink Floyd, The Who) but at the same time each one of them has a particular musical taste. My dad is into progressive rock (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis) and into guitar jam players like Jeff Beck or Jimi Hendrix. And my mum likes tango s lot... well, we are argentinian.
I think that is good to have things in common with your couple but that doesn't mean that you have to be clones (imagine a clon of mine arguing on whether to Listen to No. or Joy Division... pssssss!).

Mr. BMG will listen to New Wave music, but it's certainly not his favorite type of music. He listens to Motley Crue, Metallica, Ozzy, etc. He is a pretty big fan of The Cure, however, and I'm to blame for that [:)]

It's cool, though. Music is HUUUUUUGGGEEE part of both of our lives, and he is as passionate about 80s hair metal as I am of 80s pop and new wave. We mostly tolerate each others' choices, but neither of us give the other much grief because we know how much that music means to each of us.

The only thing I love that he hates with a passion is Fleetwood Mac. I hate the really heavy stuff he likes, so there's an unwritten rule that when we're in the car, we won't subject the other one to the Mac or whatever--because when we're in the car, there's no escape!

We compromise. He's going to go see Depeche Mode (let's just say he's not a fan) with me in April. I will go with him to see some sucky rock band. And I won't complain. Out loud, anyway.

I think it's fine to be married to/with someone who doesn't like the same stuff you like. I'd have a hard time, however, being with someone who isn't into music like I am. I wouldn't be able to relate to them at all.
