Well...as far as WLIR not being "punk", I agree, but remember...they didn't change to the new wave format until mid-1982 and, aside from hardcore and Oi!, punk was over. WLIR did have their weekly Midnight Riot show which featured hardcore. They also relentlously supported The Ramones and they even were playing Dead Rockers by Detention when that came out.



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

As far as KROQ goes, I will remain forever grateful that the ROQ's Rodney Bingenheimer was the first and, as far as I know, the only American DJ to play Duran Duran (my favorite artist of all time) when no one else here seemed to want to take that risk. It might have even been before the debut of MTV. I understand the only slot he's been allotted these days is the graveyard shift, which IMO is really no way to treat a living legend.

For Punk on NY airwaves, you have to go back to WPIX prior to their becoming "love songs, nothing but love songs" in early 1980...when they were "The New 102, From Elvis To Elvis". An aircheck or two from *then* would be greatly appreciated, but they're kinda hard to come by, it seems.

Yes...that format was fantastic and a welcome change. I believe it actually started before 1980. A sound clip from that program would be awesome.

Brilliant to see the vid, even if the sound is low. I remember it so well, it's odd to see it with the video. Was working my after-school job at a deli in Riverdale and I made the deli owner turn it to WLIR. He wasn't thrilled, but agreed. I have audio tapes of some of the end of the station in the basement somewhere...not the very end (was working) but from mid-afternoonish. Have to dig those out...

The next night, Dec. 18th, was the Depeche Mode show at MSG and Donna and Larry, I believe, intro'd the show talking about how it would be back. I remember people carrying huge WLIR banners on the floor of the Garden and the place cheering. Sad.

WPIX FM used to actually play "Max's Kansas City 1976" by Wayne County & the BackStreet Boys,I remember
Meg Greffen introducing "You Belong To Me" by Cherry Vanilla from the RCA UK import Venus D Vinyl album,
and they even played "Mangle Me" by yours truly(with The Psychotic Frogs);
now THAT was NY radio FOR REAL!
