Would you guys consider Cheap Trcik New Wave?

First album came out in 1977. Generous lashings of Synth. Always called them a Power Pop act but still....

and does it count if only two of the band members had a New Wave look? (lol)

Sorry, these guys were'nt "Hair Metal". I'd never lump them in the same category as Poison or Warrant. Robin Zander and Tom Petersson may have had long hair but I doubt Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos (both of whom seem to have been going bald for 25 years

I guess the "Hair Metal" tag has come about because they had a hit in 1988 with "The Flame". A syrupy power ballad if there ever was one and definitely not Cheap Trick at their best, but you can't judge a band with stacks of great albums to their credit (

"Live at Budokan" was playing non-stop on my portable cassette player during the summer of 1979. However, I did not think of them as new wave. To me, they fell into a vein of new rock that was cropping up along side new wave. Such bands included Cheap

Arena Rock with a pop slant, but definitely not New Wave. One of my favorite bands of all time, BTW.

I'm coming around to the New Rock idea. I still think of Cheap Trcik as being in that Big Star/Raspberries/The Shoes 70's power-pop lineage.

I remember watching the movie "Over The Edge", I think it was out in 79' and Cheap Trick was part of the soundtrack (as well as The Cars). It was so cool when your favorite bands played on the soundtrack of a movie.

Good question...

I love Cheap Trick, but never considered them new wave. Don't consider them quote unquote power-pop either. They are TOUGH to classify, like Sparks. An island unto themselves, but likeable to many.

I never thought of them as new wave, at least partly because I heard them a lot on our local AOR station. Of course that's true of the Cars, too, but I do consider them new wave. I'd call Cheap Trick more power pop/pop rock than new wave. "Dream Police

Maybe Joan Armetrading, Nazareth, BOC, How bout "Hall & Oats" along the red ledge. Features Rick Neisen,Fripp and Rundgren to name a few.

"Over The Edge" was a fab movie!! Matt Dillon was sooo hot in that. I loved those old movies we grew up on, "Foxes" "Little Darlings" -- they don't make them like that anymore.
