The Police's Don't Stand So Close To Me and The Cure's Lullaby were the songs that really got me into new wave (I've alreday liked other new wave songs but didn't know much about the genre). That was more or less 3 years ago (I'm 18 now). During my last year of high school, it seemed like I was living in 1984 instead of 2004.. I spent countless hours listening to New Wave bands that year.
I still love those two songs although I don't listen Don't stand... very oftenly because it brings me bad memories of someone (and yeah it's connected to the topic of the song).

OK two things that blew my mind. Gary Numan's performance of "Cars" on SNL and also The Specials on SNL. They played "Gangsters". I had never heard of them or seen anything like it- their energy, sound and frantic pogoing.

New Order Blue Monday...
I was at Danceateria in NYC high as a kite,(just say no) 1984 maybe,dancing around with my goth friends,late at night,and I just remember standing still with my mouth open,I ran up to the djay booth and ask "what was that"? I bought the 12 inch the next day and wore it out.
Also I remember Yazoo or Yaz "Situation" as well. Walking around the city(everyone had a boombox and I can still hear the synth bouncing off the bulidings...)

Oh yea and The Cocteau Twins...They still take my breathe away!

Winter 75-76. My best friend's older sister brought home a copy of Autobahn by Kraftwerk from her college roommate's collection. My friend thought it was a great novelty record. Even to my 8 year old ears I said no, this isn't a novelty record, this is amazing.

The first song I heard on the radio that I HAD to go out and buy was "One Way or Another" by Blondie; hence, "Parallel Lines" was my first new wave album (purchased at the DiscoMat next to Grand Central Station, in fact). I had been listening to Mark Simone on WPIX when he started playing a selection of new wave stuff ("Ca Plane Pour Moi" by Plastic Bertrand, "Cool for Cats" by Squeeze and "Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad" by the Clash stick out in my mind), which turned me on to it in the beginning, before I started picking other things up here and there, and found other avenues for new wave music. When he would do his show on Sunday mornings, he'd save the "weirder" stuff for it (can you imagine hearing "Home" by Lene Lovich followed by "On Your Radio" by Selecter anymore?). It's strange to see how one dj really started me on the course of the music I would love and listen to.

•M's - 'Pop Music' fascinated me when it first hit the airwaves....

•That, and like alot of other posters on this topic....Gary Numans 'Cars' blew me away....

•OMD's Enola Gay didnt get much airplay where I was at the time, but that had an effect on me...
