Songs or groups you can't or won't rip to mp3

I'm converting my CD's to mp3's and have finally reached the last: "The Cure - Galore." I can't bring myself to converting it - not out of any respect, or sense of legality, or anything of that nature (heaven knows I have no compunction in that regard). I just don't want to take the time to add it to my collection - can't stand 'em. Perhaps that is a bit strong - I feel more like, "Eh, why bother?" It's the last of my CD's and I don't want to spend 5 minutes of my life to rip it. What groups don't do it for you?


P.S. In contrast, I have an album from a local new wave group that produced one LP circa '81. I spent $50.00 on ADS's "Instant Music" USB device, solely for the purpose of converting the five songs off of that album to mp3 format.

Yikes, what a waste of $50. You should have gotten a cable for about $5 and plug it into your soundcard. If you need software, there's the freeware Audacity.

The Audacity software is great for that. I hooked a turntable up to my soundcard because I couldnt find an mp3 of the song The Picture by Hubert Kah, or at least the version I wanted, from the Once Bitten soundtrack. It sounds as good as the vinyl! It actually sounds a little better somehow!

Tried to rip the Connells "Boylan Heights" CD. No dice, it just won't rip. I've ripped lots of other CDs.

I love Boylan Heights. One of my favorite albums of the late 80's.

I tried to rip an Arthur Lyman cd and it wouldn't go. It's not scratched or anything. C'est la vie.

I also have a couple of Japanese singles of anime themes that I can't rip because they're mini-discs.

I usually don't rip my CD's to MP3 unless there is a special request from a friend... The point is that I don't see the rationale of doing it. Firstly, I have too many CD's, close to 900, mostly NW,I will have to buy an extra hard disk just to accomodate the music, it would be sheer madness. Secondly, I don't play my CD's too often in view of their number and because I'm listening to my Launchcast Station which plays my music based on my ratings. Thirdly, I make it a point to buy a spare of my favorite CD's therefore they are protected in case of ..... accident. But well to stick to the topic and hypothetically, I would first rip my favorite artists including the Cure which happen to be in my top 10. IMO, The Cure, The Smiths and Joy Division are groups which represent best the fresh and non-commercial sound of New Wave .
Now regarding, the artists that I would not bother to rip, I would cite Blondie, Devo, Elvis Costello, the Cars and all pseudo NW bands.[:D][:D]

Thanks for your response. Somewhere along the way I got tired of Robert Smith's whining. Ironically, I sort of feel the same way about the other groups you mentioned: Joy Division, The Smiths, along with Ultravox & New Order. Sacrilege? Perhaps. But those groups just don't do much for me anymore.

I've been enjoying all the "new" stuff (new to me) that MikeP, ekahob, eggroger, etc., have introduced me to, as well as other obscure tracks from various members on the board.

I might advocate one reason to rip your CD's: accessibility. I have about ~10,000 songs on an 50 gig drive. I can tell my MP3 player to cycle through all of them, various sets of them, various categories, genres, etc. Thus, rather than sit in a box in my basement, I have access every day to my music collection.

Well, it's not so much a problem of computer, I bought myself a little monster years ago, HP Pavilion, 80 GB Hard Drive, 512MB memory, DVD and CD Burner, TV Tuner etc but I just don't see myself spending so much time ripping music when I own the CD's....I need time for my social life, like dates eheheh. Furthermore, I enjoy also obscure bands like Fay Ray, Voice of America, Balaam and the Angels etc but U just can't compare those bands with NW stalwarts like The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Sisters oF Mercy, EATB etc. U just can't, I mean, if U are a newwaver...

You know, this could lead to a very interesting topic: Would U prefer your music collection to be in vinyl, CD's or MP3? As far as I'm concerned, I'm an epicurian, I like to look, to caress and to open wide...... I mean the CD's of course. I find MP3 very impersonal, almost virtual....Clicking on a song would deprive me of the foreplay consisting of looking for the CD on my shelves, gazing at it, checking some information, placing it gently in the player etc. Le toucher Monsieur, le toucher, that's the important thing in life and money doesn't really matter when it comes to satisfaction of the senses! eheheh
