For me "longetivity" doesn't have much to do with whether the band is still together and cutting records, but that they're still around and they have their fans - period. The Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, The Smiths: They all still have a fanbase. They're not novelty or "nostalgic" acts.

This is one of the oddest discussions I have ever seen here! I mean considering this site is about music that was unheard by 99% of the population.

To start equating relevence with record sales or airplay is just plain silly.

A more appropriate topic would be : Which band turned to crap first? R.E.M. or U2?

U2's first few Lp's were fantastic! Then came "The Joshua Tree" and they've sucked ever since. I beleive that was 1987.

R.E.M's first 6 or so Lp's were great as well. Then came "Out of Time" in the early 90's and they have sucked ever since.

I have to say that U2 will probably make a bigger mark on music history than R.E.M. will, but for the most part I really only like a handful U2 songs. I am one of those who thought R.E.M. die in the late 80's, but recent events had me re-think this. I was very much missing new R.E.M. songs to listen to. So I purchased there Up album, and while not the instant greatness of their earlier work, I liked it. This led me to pick up all of their later releases. I have to say that I am a big fan of these recodings now. Some of these songs that I never bothered to listen to before really got to me the same way there earlier stuff did. I am now proud to own every R.E.M. album, and have listened to them all quite a bit lately. U2 are huge and deserve to be, but I hope R.E.M. outlasts them.
