Your preference Vinyl, CD's or mp3?

We started discussing this topic somewhere else as a subtopic, we might as well make it a topic.
What are the advantages and inconveniences of each medium?
Accessibility has been a factor cited for preferring mp3 over the other media.
Personally, I would not consider accessibility as an important factor in view of the fact that New Wave music, like natural resources if I may say so, is not unlimited. The new releases of NW artists being not very good, we are therefore living in the past and I don't think that it's a good idea to rip our entire CD collection just to listen to our music anywhere we go. This in fact could be the reason why some Board members got tired of the Sisters Of Mercy, The Smiths or The Cure to name a few. New Wave must be considered as a fine liquor and must be sippped with moderation in the proper setting to ensure renewed satisfaction of the senses.[:D]

Bullshit. It's like sex...I never tire of it and I can never get enough. I won't say that I've got MP3s coming out my ass though. [:D]

I share your opinion but how do you explain that some dudes get tired of it? Is it because they listen to the stuff 24 hours a day? Personally I like to listen also to my Launchcast station at home and to my favorite radio while driving just to keep abreast of the latest modern rock releases....

I have swung from obsessing to having everything on vinyl, then obsessing to have it on cd and now mp3. Mind you, I still have a ton of vinyl (but I've sold a ton years ago as well), thousands of cd's and a nearly unmanageable amount of mp3's!![:)] I like the convenience and availability of mp3's!

Yeah, there's a lotta music out there. No one format has to be chosen, and you can add radio, internet casts, and everything else to it to. But for most of the time, the portability of MP3 gets the nod. How will you know a priori when you're gonna wanna sip that fine wine...again, same deal again like the hippity dippity. It's like a detachable penis - you wouldn't leave it plugged into the charger at home right?! [:p]

Let's see, since these comments seem directed at me, I'll respond:

I've been listening to this stuff since 1979. I'm nearly fanatic about collecting New Wave from the 80's. The mere fact that, for the time being, I'm bored with The Smiths or The Cure has done nothing to dull my taste for music of that era. I fully disagree with the suggestion that one must only listen to New Wave in the proper setting to ensure renewed satisfaction! I want it when I want it! [8D]

I prefer vinyl because in my sick mind the aesthetic of the record cover/sleeve etc. is as important as the music; to me, this is lost with the mp3. I understand I'm killing the accessability (sp?) of the music but it's just a personal quirk.

I will admit, however, the fun thing about listening to a webcast etc. is the element of surprise. You really aren't sure what's coming next and you get those wonderful "oh MAN I can't believe they're playing THIS!" moments.

...kind of like being on this board; you never know when someone's going to bring up a band or song that shakes things in your memory, long-forgotten.

I can't count the times that's happened to me.

I loved vinyl because of the large size covers, lyrics on the inner sleeve, and sometimes you'd get posters inside. Unfortunately a collection takes up a ton of space, and records wear out.
CDs are ok, you get the artwork and lyrics, sometimes so small I need my glasses to read...but the sound & portability is awesome.

But, I find myself listening more and more to mp3s - put it all on random and get suprised. I love those moments when I hear something that I forgot I downloaded, or never fully listened to. I love that they take up no physical room and I can have thousands & thousands of songs. Matter of fact, I'm converting everything I have over to mp3.

As for listening to a genre non-stop...I do it, I switch between new wave/punk to disco & back again. I have no connection to modern music anymore, and not much interest in it. Since coming here I've found thousands of songs and artists I never heard back in the 80's - so it's like discovering the genre all over again.

CDs/CD-Rs for me, but that's b/c that is what overwhelmingly constitutes my collection. Other than DLing and then burning to CD-R, I don't deal with mp3s....nor do I have an "mp3" player. However, just last night, I saw an ad for a 128 MB mp3 player, and it finally clicked in my mind that these are the new Walkmen (or discman). So, I suppose eventually, I'll get around to procuring an mp3 player. The portability appeals.

I do not have to be constantly listening to music, however. I enjoy silence. Indeed, while grading schoolwork--much of which are essays--I need silence to focus. On the other hand, 80% of the music I listen to is New Wave.

In reality a mixture of all three.

I have paid £75 to get a rare CD release and nearly all of my rare CD come from Japan (thank them for re-releasing some great stuff that would never see the light of day in the West).

I use vinyl less and less as I know of someone who performs a vinyl to cleaning service and you can't tell the difference.

MP3s are the main source of audio entertainment these days. Both radio and stand-up comedy MP3s at work and music MP3s when I'm out and about.

Vinyl: Even with all of the advances that have been made the past 20 years, I still don't think CDs can touch vinyl in terms of overall sound quality. The music just seems to jump out at you with vinyl. All of the instruments are clearly defined and come through crisp and clear. The basslines and kick drums seem so much more powerful on vinyl as well. Listening to vinyl is like having the musicians standing right in front of you. Listening to CDs is like having the musicians on the other side of the plexiglass and listening to them through a high quality pair of headphones. The sound is still there, but the impact isn't.

CDs: Love the format, the convenience, and the lack of surface noise. I miss the sound quality of vinyl, but I essentially sacrificed it for the ease of use that comes with CDs and the pleaure of not having to deal with cracks and pops.

MP3s: Made it possible to send and receive music over the internet, made i-pods possible, and continues to open new doors for music fans. However, I see it strictly as a means to an end. If I love the music, I'll be the official release to get the better sound quality, the packaging, and to support the artist.

One quick observation: Vinyl recorded to CD often sounds exceptional. In fact, most of the vinyl transfers I've heard on CDR (if they were done correctly) sound better than even the most recent production CD releases. I haven't quite figured that one out yet. If the medium (CDs) can replicate the great sound quality you get from a vinyl record, then why are official CD releases that were produced from the original master tapes so lacking?

Most of my collection of vinyl and cd comes from when I was younger.

There was a major level of excitment, more than just listening to the music, when a new record was purchased. Everything from the cover art, to the inside sleeve to the lyrics to the unknown b-sides were part of the fun in buying vinyl and all became part of the material collection.

CDs..maybe it was because i was older but the same level of excitment was never there with a new purchase. That little booklet cant replace the above.

I like mp3's for entirely different reasons. Portability being #1.
I cant remember half the music i listened to when i was young and recognize even fewer of the mp3s I see traded or offered on this site. I'll download them, and sometimes hearing just the first note of the song instantly brings me back 20 years, in my first car, cruising on a sat night. Now thats cool.
