Opins? Private Forum for Postings?

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.
NOTE: requesting songs that are entirely unrelated to the genres discussed here or easily found on CD is strongly discouraged and posts will be enforced as needed.

I too have been concerned and after seeing the demise of Torchomatic. I would hate to see such a good source and the community suffer for something really simple.

What raised a red flag for me was that some of the stuff is available for purchase. The rare OPP and Vinyl I don't mind...but when I got a hold of something that a acquaintance was involved in, that sort of raised the flag a little higher.

Thanks Blir for starting the thread so we can addresd our concerns for a place we all care about!

I think this topic is warranted to discuss the music that is be posted here that is still in print and can be purchased. That music has no business being on the outpost.

Maybe Mike P. can let us know what he thinks about this. I know he has enjoyed some of the music that has been posted here.

Myself, I cannot use the hub. So this forum has been great for me.
None of us want any trouble.
If it's still okay with Mike P. and people use common sense, it's a great place to get hard to find music.
I do not like the laundry lists of requests. (Or large lists of music to share). Maybe these people can just announce their intentions and can be emailed directly from a member.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has posted all this hard to find music. It has been awesome. Especially for me since accessing the hub is impossible for me right now.

Pending a decision on the matter, I think that a general house cleaning is in order. I suggest therefore that all those who posted links to music available on the market, simply erase them, anyway they are no longer active. However, since practically nothing would be left of their postings, they might as well replace the links with a joke to justify the word "enjoy". [:D][:D]

Good topic Blir and I echo all the "common sense" sentiments. Though the intent of this forum is for the exchange of obscure/rare/out of print material this definition could be lost to some posters as they may not know if something is "readily available" or not. Some people may just get all excited and simply post. Others may just ask for stuff that's not all that hard to find. How do we solve this? We can't expect *every* single person to use "common sense", can we? People will make mistakes. Maybe the mods should start deleting posts at their discretion. Or maybe we do the private section but people need to get past the "exclusivity" issues. Pussy footing around this issue is not going to make it disappear and I for one would be very, very upset if anything were to happen to our Outpost. Decisions need to be made and I know that nothing good lasts forever. When that other thing is working I don't do the yousendit thing. And honestly, I always felt uncomfortable talking about our thing on these boards. Too public, for anyone's eyes. Anyone can pose as a new member with lots to share and get in busting the whole thing.

Send your requests to join the hub to: hub_invite@hotmail.com

I really feel like if you're going to post some songs, make sure they're out-of-print. A little research goes a long way. Matter of fact, you can support the Outpost while doing it. On the home page, scroll to the bottom and click on the Amazon link. Once at Amazon, simply see if your music is being sold commercially.

I'm guilty of posting a few songs recently, so I suppose I shouldn't say anything. But, I've found this section to be overwhelming with too much stuff & find myself visiting it less and less. I know it's fun to post something that you love & think no one has heard before - that's really a genuine part of this board - but maybe some restraint is in order?

It was suggested earlier that a private registered-only forum would be cool for the veterans. I hated that idea, but one more for the purposes of keeping this kinda stuff more private might not be bad.

This message board has moderators/forum leaders. On other sites forum leaders have the power to edit posts. Editing a link to music from a post and explaining why, is a much better idea than dividing this site into veterans and non vets. Besides, judging from who asks about the hub, myself being one of those people, it seems the veterans already have a playground.

Speaking for myself, all the stuff I've posted is extremely obscure and/or hard to find. Usually, if you do find this stuff on OOP vinyl, CD or whatever, you'll be paying through the nose to a GEMM seller or eBay bloodsucker, and not a penny of that will go the either the record company OR the artist anyway.

Additionally, I resent the assertion that I or anyone else may have been posting out of a "hey, look, I've got lots of cool stuff too!" attitude. I see no need for such an assertion, and I think it should be retracted. I post purely out of the joy of sharing nigh impossible-to-find stuff with people who share my eclectic musical tastes.

Nevertheless, I'll refrain from further postings unless a specific hard-to-find song is requested.

A pity Synthpop went back and edited his posts. Thanks for all your contributions, Synthpop, and for your appreciation of mine. Ditto to all others who have contributed and appreciated.

I'm specifically NOT talking about vets and non-vets. I'm talking about a Reg vs Non-Reg area, not for the purposes of some "playground" but for some privacy and discretion. It seems that MikeP has set precedents for this place to be as egalitarian and non-interfering as possible. It would suck to have to see Mods' hands in this that much. Either self-control or a "system" would be better IMHO.

Also, the Hub is not some "veteran" playground. In fact, we've begged for fresh blood and in fact will only thrive on as much diversity as possible. Just ask Tiger to reg you. There's an extremely minimal request that you've been seen around here for about 25 posts - this is to project his ass, not to be exclusive.

I've shared several things, always after checking UK and US sites to be sure the songs were not available. Most things are as a thanks for the other things I have found. I was bothered when seeing common things in posts, especially for songs that are available at iTunes at a relatively inexpensive cost. So, common sense seems to be what is needed - make sure things are rare and obscure. This is a great community which I would hate to see shut down.

I like that I have found things I would never even have known to ask for, though. Not sure how that could continue.

Other sharing is not much of a reality for me, as I am only on-line about an hour at a time - rarely for long periods.

I didn't see or hear of anybody pointing a finger at you or anyone else specifically. I heard it as that being someone's feeling or impression, that's all. They're free to feel that way and you're free to disagree and protest. Asking for a retraction is a bit much IMHO.

Waver, I hope you were'nt offended by any of my comments as I certainly did not mean to subversively imply that you have made any irresponsible posts. I know that you, Synthpop, MSK Remember, and a few others have put up some very valuable, rare, hard to find and out of print material by artists no longer under the auspices of a record label or by now defunct labels. In addition I'd like to add that the majority of material posted falls into this category. But we have had a few instances of people putting up relatively mainstream stuff. In fact, now that I think about it I think I made a post or two like that in my recent Pet Shop Boy collaboration commentary [B)] The legalese can become quite vague also when it comes to television and radio broadcasts as the intellectual property falls into the ownership of the broadcast company and not the artist. What if that company no longer exists? I'm certainly no expert in these matters but just want to throw in a little more to think about. I dunno, none of us are experts so I really feel it's prudent that we err on the side of caution. We have a great thing going on here. Let's not ruin it.

Poorly worded last sentence, my apologies.

Regarding the hub: I did ask and was told I needed a minimum # of posts to join and thats cool, I can understand why.

My point is creating an elite members only area doesnt solve the problem at hand. Links to music can still be posted by anyone.
