My opinion on all this:

I have always been against the posting of "shopping lists" of tracks as this shows nothing but greed by the poster. Also it has the unwanted side-effect of attracting attention of "the man". Likewise the postings of lists of songs to share, the less attention we draw to the forum, the better.

As for asking for tracks that are rare/OOP/ etc., well that's me safe then! [:D]

Seriously, it is becoming more common to find posts that are asking for tracks that can easily be found on CD. Posts like these are sure to raise the ire of "the man" and the last thing I want to do is see this site go the way of Torchomatic.

The tracks made availalbe here should be of a nature that are not likely is see an official re-release in the future. My recent post should hopefully cover this aspect, and there has been great posts of this nature in recent times featuring bands like Experimental Products.

As for a private forum in order to post music, I am grudgingly in favour of this. The reason why I say grudgingly is that although it may seem like elitism, it is simply common sense in order to protect what we already got.

Well, personally I'm sad to see this go by the way side. I wholeheartedly agree that there were too many people posting and/or asking for readily available stuff. There again, I am glad some of the songs were posted...songs that I had totally forgotten about or had never heard before. Wow...all those b-sides and extended versions which I didn't know existed. *sniff*

Being on a Mac, I have had my fair share of issues trying to get onto the hub. This was a newfound experience for me and quickly became my most visited website. Either way, I am sure what is being done is for the best.

Now, if I were to go and create my own forum, does anyone know of a good place for hosting? One that would be secure enough?

And I would react further... As a neutral observer, I always thought that Democrats were more likely to be pedophiles than Republicans but well Blir has his own way of turning things around ..... [:D]

I've had the same feelings about the rash of yousendit's that have popped up here that many of you are expressing, it is worrysome to say the least.

In my opinion though Blir, what you should have done was made a poll. If you'll recall, a thread similar to this one, in which MikeP actually posted has come up before. The amount of threads featuring yousendits however, regarldess of the poster's intentions, has increased since then.

fritzb mentioned that searching for something on google can lead you here, and it's a fact, that is how I found this place, and no doubt many others as well.

I'll leave it up to you, but my suggestions for a poll would be:

A) There should be clear criterea for what can, and can not be posted, and this would be monitored by someone who has the ability to edit posts if necessary.

B) Keep it in the hub (I realize this isn't practical for everyone)

C) Do, in fact, have a private "registered only" area.

D) A, B, and C, or any combination of the above.

E) Continue to tempt fate (i.e. do nothing)

I realize this may be unfavorable, and seem like strong measures, but I'm just being frank with my opinions. There may also be possibilities I haven't thought of and/or didn't mention.

I don't belive that simply having a democratic conversation about this will have any singnificant impact whatsoever. Honestly this is a decision that needs to be made by the site administration, but I thank you Blir for bringing up a very valid point, and being willing to hear everyone's input.

Unfortunately, "common sense" is not a virus, and just because one person has it doesn't mean that everyone else will "catch" it.

(NOTE: I do not mean to be disrespectful to anyone who does, or has posted songs, lord knows I've requested things and received some too. I am also not opposed to the idea of yousendit, but I do agree with many that it has become too frequent and too careless.)

Could see this coming--really got to the point it was hard to keep up with all the songs being posted. I myself never posted-but only because Im an idiot that couldnt figure out how. Really hate seeing the postings go away totally--b sides in particular. Perhaps any song postings go through one person before being posted?--I NOMINATE Blir!!!![:D]

1. I love music -- especially if it is free and if it is something I enjoy.

2. I'm also a commercial photographer, currently suing a multi-billion dollar corporation for Copyright Infringement. The company has been found "Willfully infringing" my copyright. Also the case is almost 2 years old (I discovered the infringements on 2/24/04), and we are just now going into the damage phase of the case. The trial is scheduled for July 11, 2006 unless the case is settled before then.

I certainly appreciate everyone wanting to share music that is extremely hard to locate, or completely unavailable through commercial means (out of print, rare, etc) but I'm just saying, if it was this easy to get a ruling of "Willful Copyright Infringement" against the defendant in my case (their net profit during the course of the infringement was $786,900,000, or seven hundred eighty six million nine hundred thousand dollars -- so they had the cash to fight the case and they still lost), I think posting up free music on an internet site is not going to be a good defense, if it ever comes to that.

To be on safer grounds, we could post only extended clips and whoever is interested could request the full version from the clip owner. Doing that however would entail more efforts and remove part of the fun and I pity the dudes who will receive dozens of requests everyday.[:D]
If this is not feasible,it is always possible to check with Amazon if an album is out of print, as mentioned earlier or inquire on the Board, there will always be a member knowledgeable about the matter.

Yeah, I was also against the idea back then- but that was because the theme wasn't entirely about MUSIC and was supposedly for veterans alone. So, it would simply be unfair to the newbies who have unfortunately discovered this site too late.

Now, seeing that there are still some people who couldn't get into the hub, then I think it would be sensible to have a private REGISTERED-ONLY FORUM (for sharing & discussing obscure stuff).
