Actually, there are a ton of new wave lyrics that follow the proper [b]5-7-5[/b] format of a haiku. Here’s a sample:

There's an army on
the dance floor, it's a fashion
with a gun my love.

Nowhere girl, what you
had you need, nowhere girl, all
functional and neat.

But there’s something in
your eyes that says maybe that’s
never say never.

I know what guys want, I know
what boys like boys like…

A couple that are stretching it…

(breaking apart a multi-syllable word is probably against Haiku rules)

(throw that extra “you” in there and it works)

(if you say “prayers” really fast it sounds like one syllable…)

Heh, great stuff iposse. I don't know how practical it would be to insist on absolute strict haiku. Even the 5-7-5 [i]onji[/i] or syllable requirement is tough since that word doesn't really translate directly to syllable but rather "sound". Many of our words with multiple hard sounds would probably get blown out into way more [i]onji[/i] than syllables.

It would probably also be bad form to break apart every phrase among all three lines. I've heard each should have a distinct thought of its own, or at the very least one line should while the other two could be split or have a joined thought.

The coolest guidance I saw was that it must at least convey "an experience captured in clear images." Something expressing the human condition. Based on that, your new wave lyrics really nail it - very emotive as my favorite new wave lyrics usually are.
