As, GlitteringPrize mentioned, I don't listen to music for the artist's personality. That's equivelant to thinking that movie & tv actors are like their characters in real life.

Well, I always like a good sneer from somebody like John Lydon, causethat always was and is part of his profession/skill. He does it with humour too.

My God...reading this article (which it not really is), makes me believe that:
- Paul Weller wanted the same succes as James bore Blunt has for the same boring music he used to make after The Jam.
- Nobody believes that Geldof gets a reward for the Boomtown Rats, which most of the people long forgot. What's wrong for giving that Geldof a pad on the back for his international politics, which involves musicians aswell ?
- Sting is a typical 'Britisher', that is humble and easy to get along with. May be Weller thought/thinks he's in the same league...and the audience doesn't ! (very frustrating indeed)
- To kick backwards the way he does to a person that died so long ago and can't defend himself, is actually a sad thing to do.

I only know Paul Weller for his still very good song 'Long Hot Summer'. But can't believe how invisible his middle of the road-music has become !! He'd better put some of his anger in his music, cause now I only hear him in the supermarket, and I wonder that's the way you want to be neglected with your music !! You COULD get very frustrated about that, you know...

Wow!! I've never imagined that Paul Weller could pronunce such words.. really thought he was a relaxed guy. It sort of reminded me of the Gallagher brothers and how they say the same things.
I totally agree on his comments about James Blunt (I'm going to make myself a T-shirt that says "I hate James Blunt".. my sisters really laugh every time I say this).
Coen has a good point, we all know that Geldof is given awards for his charity work and not for his musical career.. duh!
Really don't like what Weller said about Sting and Freddie Mercury... but know that he said that in order to get attention.

I was thinking on the supermarket music comment and have to say that in the supermarket I like best, they really put on good music.

Mechi, do yourself a favour and don't even bother to put that name on a shirt. To much wrong energy for a guy who only gets his attention by chartlists, that suck most of the times anyway.

As others have mentioned, Weller has always been critical of his peers. If you read any of his interviews circa 1985-1986, he basically slags off (to use the British term) just about everyone else that particpated in Band Aid. The only artists that I ever remember him being complementary of were the ones that were doing stuff similar to what he was doing with the Style Council (JoBoxers, Animal Nightlife, Blow Monkeys, etc.)

The funny thing is that I used to be a huge Weller fan during the 80s, but twenty years later, I find that a lot of his stuff hasn't held up very well. The early to mid period Jam stuff is still classic, and I still dig some of the solo stuff he did in the 90s, but I've grown bored with the rest.

I still like his output throught the early 90's but have been dissapointed with his last 4 or so releases.

Morrissey used to talk shit about his peers back in the day also, but it sounded a lot funnier at the time (and I ususally agreed with his opinion).

That "gasolina" guy is really dreadful but I didn't know that the song was popular in the US beacuse it's in spanish... here when you go dancing you listen it at least three times a night (that's why I've been going to alternative discos lately).

Exactly! James Blunt exists to sell weepy music to high school girls. I mean, what little schoolgirl is not gonna love some guy crooning "You're Beautiful..you're beautiful"?
It's like Paul Weller suddenly forgot what pop stars are all about. That shit's been going on since the dawn of popular music (a scrawny Sinatra with a mountain of hair singing about how he's too shy to approach you and that he daydreams about holding your hand, etc.)
It's a bad move for Weller because James Blunt just started out and for an established artist like Paul to attack him almost brings some sort of weird validity to Blunt's music. It's like "Well gee, if Paul Weller is so threatened by him maybe ther's something to this guy...". Actually I think Paul Weller may have inadvertedly shored up Blunt's fanbase of teenage girls. Bad move if you're hoping Blunt will just go away. Why even ackowledge him?
Attacking Geldof and Sting seemed trite (and believe me I have a LOT of problems with Sting solo myself). Thanks for cluing us in that Geldof got the award for his humanitarian work. Duh! No shit?

Anger and rage is befitting of young "punks" and kind of goes with the territory. But at some point, you grow up. If you are still full of vitriol at middle age, you haven't done much work on yourself and are on your way to becoming a bitter old man.

I, perhaps mistakenly, expect those with the ability to create such personally transcendent lyrics to be able to apply them to themselves. I think the disturbing thing is how somebody with such a gift to touch people could be such a miserable prick.

I'm not in high school any more, I'm in university for a year now... but I would never have liked a guy singing "You are beautiful, you are beautiful, it's true...". That's vulgar!!!!
When I was at high school, I spend my breaks listening to The Cure and The Police (ejem, ejem, I don't like to hear bullshit about Sting)and of course Sting and Robert Smith were (still are) my platonic loves! [:D]

BTW: If anyone catches the video for "You're Beautiful", James Blunt jumps to his death at the end after realising that the woman in question will never give him the time of day (it's true..after he leaps into the water there are'nt any bubbles floating afterwards..he's dead as a doornail. That ought to fulfill a few wishes for ya.LOL)
It's funny. I don't think he's that big a deal in the states. Just another of the Starbucks-swilling singer/songwriter crew. A dime a dozen. In the U.K. however, he's a massive star apparantly.
