'Smash Hits' magazine to close after 28 years. very sad to hear indeed. this mag was BIG for me in the 80s. so was 'No.1' mag

They had Star Hits in North America .

It became Smash Hits later on in it's life here in North America, just before it ceased publication as well.

Wow--I didn't realize Smash Hits was still around. I used to love Star Hits and knew that Smash Hits lasted longer, but this much longer? Wow! I thought Smash Hits died in the 90's!

I used to own every issue from the '80s...then, in late 1989, I pulled every issue with Duran Duran to lend to my girlfriend at the time. We broke up a few months later, and of course, I never got the magazines back! [:(!] I still have the others, though. It got a bit sucky around 1988 when the New Kids hit, but from '84-'86, I loved it, especially the lyrics.

Cool mag, although very glossy and sometimes bordering on fluffy...but Star Hits (as it was called here in the US) was the ONLY mag that was totally devoted to the New Wave musicians we liked the best. I ate that mag right up; I loved it. Their pix were great, and it was the only chance to see pix, interviews, and lyrics about some truly obscure NW bands. At the height of my fandom, I was a total Duranimal, and Star Hits quenched the thirst, so I was into that aspect, too.

I liked their feature wherein they had a musician list and discuss their own favorite records of the day; I always enjoyed that kind of thing.

Anybody do the Pen Pals page ? I had TONS of pen pals thru Star Hits!

And to this day, the only "sweepstakes" I've ever won is when Star HIts had a contest to win Duran Duran's video collection. That cemented my love for Star Hits!

'Smash Hits' mag was great esp in the early 80's. I remember buying it for the first time with Wham on the front cover. And 'No.1' was fun to read too, not to forget 'My Guy' and 'Oh Boy!'

and TOYAH was the 80s 'cover girl' for SMASH HITS quite a few times during her initial hot streak(the magazine even ,in the late 70s,had a Jayne County competition/give away, to coincide with the release of the 'live' Jayne County "Rock & Roll Resurrection"album; those were the days.
