obscure club bands

what are some of the most obscure NJ club band you can recollect?
Hint: Dirt, KNUPS, Hitsville, Creations, Showplace, etc.

I don't know why I am replying but for some reason this really strikes a strange nerve for four reasons

1. I cant sleep
2. I saw Voice Farm about 28,646,161,323 times at the Berkekey Square
3. Oh yea The Uptones were really cool too
4. Does anyone remember Toxic Reasons live at the Mab

Here are some other forgotten but great band from late 70's and early 80's: Wowii, DeWaves Bonnie Parker Band, The Metros, Max Cool & the Cubes...

WHAT MAKES A BAND "LOST?"

I guess I'm kind of confused as to what makes a band into a "lost band."

To me the Plimouls are a lost band-because of their lack of household-name status and that they had one song in the top 100 and two great albums and they fact that I love them.

Here's a real "lost" band: Milwaukee's Tambours: They had the whole mid-80s neo-sixties garage thing down to an art-I would compare them to Plasticland (another Milwaukee group), the Vipers, The Lyres and The Chesterfield Kings (are these bands "lost" too? in spite of their recorded outpot-if so, Glenn Rhese, if you're reading this, please contact me). They circulated a killer demo tape. At my college radio station we put several songs on tape cartridge and played the bejeezus out of them.

When they "officially" recorded as Cherry Cake, I didn't think they were as good.

Oooh I just remmebered to other great Wisconsin bands: Tatters ( a power-pop combo from Eau Claire) I think they recorded a tape-and the Dummy Club-A cramps-a-billy band that did a tape and a German (!?) ep.

Face it folks-Wisconsin "The home of the Violent Femmes" rocked pretty hard in the 80s.

I too would consider The Plimsouls a great lost band (even though they released a new album in 1998), but it would be too easy and not as much fun for me to focus my blog on bands that the average, O.K. above average, new wave fan might know. I have been going through my vinyl and finding great old music that I haven't listened to in 20 years. I have listened to The Plimsouls, Lyres, Three O' Clock and many other bands that can be considered lost many times over the years and since I haven't lost track of them I personally don't consider them lost. Maybe that is my definition; Lost Bands are bands that I have personally lost track of over the years - mostly due to my vinyl collection and turntable being in storage (until recently) and a lack of release on CD.

I also want to keep my site focused on bands that never were signed to major labels but I may change that since this milestone didn't guarantee success. Besides, the downfall of many bands was their signing to major labels (Dirty Looks?).

btw - do you have any mp3's of the Tambours, Tatters or Dummy Club? They sound like candidates for my site.

How about these lost 80's bands from the Philly Area:

The Sharks, The Darrows (their lp, "Cellar Into Eaves" is excellent),Pyramid, and Scram.

Anyone ever hear of these bands?

In my example,I wouldn't necessarily call all of these obscure club bands, although at the time they certainly were only on the verge of being known outside their own region in some cases. We had a couple small clubs in upstate New York, where we enjoyed the likes of The Verge, The Bongos (yep, got some free 45s from them after the show they brought up for me - they told me they actually opened for Throbbing Gristle before), Blotto, Fear of Strangers, and 10,000 Maniacs (they were in the early days for sure, and Natalie was stunning)......also Winter Hours (great great band) and The Cuts. I'll always remember these shows for their tiny venues, great performances, and the fact that you could actually chat with the band members.

I remember The Dead Milkmen. Their "Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance To Anything)" is a scream!
I still have the cassette version & play it often when I find myself taking music a bit too seriously. I especially like the "Hung Like A Horse" mix.[:p]

I saw the Plimsouls a couple times about 9 or so years ago at Bottom of the Hill in SF. They sure had aged, but still sounded good.

Quite Life, you must live in our around SF? I remember the Mab (Mabuhay Gardens. Did you ever go to the Farm? Haven't been to Berkeley Square in ages. Last time there I went to see our friends the Cadillac Tramps open for Green Day.

Ekahob, I just downloaded some Three O'Clock recently and have enjoyed listening to it again. I saw them at Wolfgangs in Sf back in 1985 I think it was. My girlfriend and I were in LOVE with Louis Gutierrez.

By any chance do you remember The Dronez (from Albany)?

Haven't heard the Dronez, but have quite a few other bands from that area. I would highly recommend The Verge and Lumpen Proles, two very good bands from early 80s from the Albany area I believe.
