The other day I was watching music videos... and first "Save a prayer" came on and then "Close to me" came.... and I remember how good were the starting notes of both songs.
Nobody mention "A boy with a thorn in his side" by The Smiths... that first guitar section is totally great!! [8D]

Like Wolvie, I too am haunted by the opening notes of "Smoke on The Water". bwahaha, right.

For me, it's the opening bars of "The Cutter" by Echo & the Bunnymen. You could play that tune in any club, in any town, at any time and Wolvie and DayGloJo would magically appear on the dance floor.

I was preparing a list (many of which were already mentioned), and I came to the conclusion that if you love a song, then in general, you think it has a great opening. (YMMV, of course.) So, I'll give my props to "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals. I don't particularly like Roland Gift's falsetto, but that opening hook is killer.

Memorable openers for me are ones that sounds so different from the rest of the songs and not necessarily repeated in the song and if it sounds very grand and anthemic, then it's an instant classic, like a few of U2's songs.

The one that does it for me is actually Blondie's Union City Blues, it sounds so grand to me. Has anyone heard about the English soccer team from Leeds using this song as their theme? Apparently they got permission from Blondie and hired some band to mixed a new version with new lyrics to it and they will play it during every home game. That's a great honor I think.

Good choice, Scramjet! But I think "Words" was overall a much better song. Man, that was a cool band. Great music AND gazongas, you can't beat that.[:D]
