There have been quite a few Japan titles mentioned, one that needs to be added to the list is Obscure Alternatives. I can listen to that song all day.

Great thread! Some of the songs that come to mind have already been mentioned, but I'd add the following:

"Billy Hyena" by Wide Boy Awake (Really, anything by Wide Boy Awake; Mooney is a killer bass player)

"Caverns" by Liquid Liquid (Later sampled for Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines". Maybe not New Wave per se, but by far my favorite bassline of all time.

Crazy bass lines!!! I love them. Especially Shriekback's stuff!!! And Liquid Liquid's "Cavern". Don't forget "Under The Gun" by Face to Face. Barbie and the Kens' "Just a Gigolo" with the awesome "James Bond" break in it! Ministry's "I Wanted To Tell Her (12-inch mix). "Devil Inside" by INXS.

A guy I work with insists the Waitresse's song Christmas Rap has one of the best underappreciated bass lines out there.

It's not really a "cool" bass line but I always get hyptonised by the bassline to Talk Talk's "It's My Life."

Yeah, it's a little redundant but I can't get it out of my head when I'm done listening to the song.

As for Japan, YOWZA! Those sexy bass lines are positively shiver-me-tender. Last summer while I was prepping and painting some detailed baseboards in our living room, lying on the floor on my belly, I had some Japan on the stereo and Mick Karn's throbbing, yummy basslines really quite affected me...or maybe it was the paint fumes, ha ha.[:)]

Tracy Wormworth is flat out one of the most underappreciated bass players of the NW era, IMHO.

I have to say that most coolest new wave basslines are responsibility of Peter Hook. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of the bass if I may compare....
Simon Gallup's basslines during the Seventeen Seconds-Faith-Pornography era were also worth of being praised.
