converting vinyl to mp3 on my pc.

I would like to do this correctly, but im having a problem connecting my stereo to my pc. Heres my set-up.

sony midi system with turntable connected to the in connecter.
i also have the obvious out connecter too on the stereo, so do i connect the cable to my pc from there? Thanks for replying.

Yes. Stereo's Line Out -> Computer Soundcard's Line In.
DO NOT USE THE MICROPHONE INPUT!

Also, in the computer's software mixer, make sure it is ONLY recording what's being played through the Line In and nothing else, or else you might end up hearing DING!, new mail alert, or other sounds during your music.

You should also save uncompressed files (wave/aiff) of the music you record to archive. MP3 is lossy and you may want to upgrade later on. Having it as wave/aiff means you don't have to re-record the stuff again.

Thanks for the feedback, how do i go about finding out to just record the music? The sound im getting at the moment is very faint, so could it have to do with the software mixer?

EDIT: I have noticed when i right click on the volume properties, the line in is ticked for recording, also theres a few others ticked aswell, so do i deselect them and just have the line in selected only?

That's probably a good idea. Also, make sure "mute" isn't selected for the line-in function and that the "slider" for the volume is up to a sufficient level.

Back in the day when I transferred vinyl, I always had my turntable connected to an amplifer/receiver and then the amplifier/receiver connected to the computer's soundcard. Does the turntable play loud and clear through the midi system's speakers (when it's NOT connected to the computer)? I'm just wondering if you Midi system has enough juice to properly amplifify the signal coming from your turntable.

tomfin2000 is right.
You need to go from your turntable to your "Phono Pre-Amp" to your sound card. If you do not have a seperate Phone Pre-Amp, you will have to run the signal to your phono input on your combo amplifer and then the OUT of your Amp to your soundcard.

Just running the turntable directly to your soundcard without a phono pre amp will not provide a high enough input signal and the RIAA EQ curve will not be compinsated for and it will sound really bad.

There is much more to it than what any of us have gone over here so far. Read a lot and ask questions and the just get into it and do it. That's the only way you will really learn. Depending on har far you want to get into it, you may be buying another sound card depending on what you have now.

Why should that stop you?
Unless you are living on the side of a cliff (or some other extreme situation), you should be OK.

I do have sound coming from the stereo midi system, its just when i play back the recording on the computers software program i have the faint sound. My soundcard is only stock, realtek AC97, which are fitted to most home pc's i think? Anyway i will try it out again soon with another amp, let you know how i get on.[:)]
