Yesterday and Today Records in Miami, FL. I'm pretty sure it's long gone by now though.

The Record Exchange in Jonesboro, Arkansas . It opened in 1981 and the owner sold it in 1988 when Cd's began taking over in a serious way. It closed a couple of years after that.

Then:

Jack's Music in Red Bank, New Jersey. I was a frequent customer from '85 to '92, and bought many 45's there.

Now:

The Record Exchange on S. Hampton in St. Louis. What a great collection of new wave on vinyl there...I've found albums there that most Earthlings have never heard of!

Another SF oldtimer...do you remember Vintage Vinyl in North Beach and the Record Vault ("punk in the front, metal in the back"--or vice versa?) on Polk as well???

I was really impressed with Amoeba when I was in Hollywood last year.

The Peddlar was great...real obscure stuff, and if they didn't have it, they'd find it for you. Another store in Toronto that I found many treasures at was Peter Dunn's Vinyl Museum. Don't think I ever paid more than $2.00 for anything there, and it was all new or in mint- condition. Sadly, now also just a memory.

Back when I lived in California I used to go to Blue Meanie in El Cajon, Off The Record near SDSU or Lou's Records in Encinitas.

Back in the 80s those were the only places in or around San Diego where you could get any decent punk or new wave music.

Living in the CA Bay Area, Amoeba in SF is hard to beat.

But I rarely go to stores anymore: eBay is quite possibly the greatest record store ever for variety.

But for a trip down memory lane...these may not be on any "greatest" list but for kicks I thought I'd list my old haunts. Growing up in Connecticut, we'd head to NYC about once a month to hit the awesome stores in the Village. This was circa 1984-1990.

Of course we hit Tower Records on Broadway at 4th -- how could you not stop? It was huge and had every domestic release we could imagine.

But we also went to:
- Bleecker Bob's
- Golden Disc
- Record Hunter
...and lots of other places that we never knew the name of.

Closer to home, we'd head to Nu Music in Bridgeport, CT, and Johnny's in Darien, CT for quality vinyl. There was also a great store in White Plains, NY...or was it Mamaroneck? I forget -- I only went there once or twice.

And if you know the NYC area at that time, you could always stop by a local Crazy Eddie store (now closed) which had a poor selection but was close to home and had an occasional gem.

Remember the days when CDs were kept in a glass case near the register because there were only a few CDs released a month? Wow, it's been a long time!

Newbury Comics Harvard Square, Cambridge. I spent a lot of time in that store!

There was also a used record store up on Comm Ave near Boston University that I went to all the time. Can't remember the name of that one though.
