I still have a Yahama Keytar in mothballs packed away. Back in college I used it only when room was at a premium and there was no place for my entire keyboard rack. I play guitar as well and cliche or not the audience always gave you more attention with the guitar that hidden behind a keyboard rack.

As to the question at hand, I like both "types" of bands equally but am most impressed with bands that blended the two instruments sucessfully.

killing joke may seem like a guitar band but they always seem to have the synth lurking in the background.V.a.s.t is another band that combines the two effectively.

Although I like some synth-pop the guitar bands rock my world. You could add to the list: The Church, The Barracudas, R.E.M., Big Country, Buzzcocks, Dream Syndicate, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Chameleons (although known to use a synth at times), Hoodoo Gurus, The Records, Translator, Red Rockers, The Romantics, The Vapors, early Undertones.

Bands that used both (and therefore hard to classify): A Flock of Seagulls, Split Enz, Ultravox

Actually they require about the same level of skill although I found keyboard much easier to play than guitar (although I play them VERY badly). Everybody's wired differently so it all depends on what you have a natural affinity for.

I was. The Floating Plaid. Played keyboards (naturally) and occasional guitar. We were an experimental noise outfit...well, we had no choice...we could'nt really play. Band broke up after founding member sold all the instruments for heroin money.

I was reading the Wikipedia (an encycl. similar 2 Encarta) and it says that AF0 is a synth wave band... but 4 what I see, it's like New 0rder... can't be classified.

Doesn't matter.
I'm going to like what I'm going to like,
the music is for everyone to enjoy.

And you know what?
It's a lot harder to play a keytar than you'd think,
especially if you've never even had one in you hands.
The nice thing about using one is that people can see your hands,
and it allows you to get out from behind a stand, play to the crowd,
move around and interact more.

Synth bands vs guitar bands, I like them both.
Football vs Baseball. I like football a lot more as a spectator sport. I realize that some people like baseball better, and that's fine with me.

If I had to make a bet, I'd say that a higher percentage of people that are fans of "New Wave" would be more inclined to embrace synth technology in the music.

Did you know (as an example) that Vince Clarke of the SYNTH band Erasure writes songs on Guitar and Piano? The electronics are added afterwards, and I happen to really like the results.
