Your parents' musical taste?

It was pretty much country. As I have gotten older, I have learned to appreciate the "old" country artists like Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, etc., but I have never been able to listen to the new stuff.

I've mentioned in another post that my parents like The Who, Led Z, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd.
My dad likes progressive rock a lot and not only the most popular bands. He also liked bands that are not as famous as Pink Floyd or Genesis, such as Premiatta (a progressive rock Italian band). He also likes guitar jam players and free jazz. Oh, and he likes Tina Turner.. which is a weird point in his taste.
My mum also Likes Annie Lennox and REM. However, she had never understood what Michael was saying until I explained her the lyrics in a slower English and in Spanish.
Unfortunately, my parents aren't new wavers.. I wish they had, because then I would have more vinyls to appreciate!! But my dad says that he is getting used to The Cure and that Joy Division isn't bad though it's not his type of band... well, it's mine type of band, who cares?? Anyway, I own a vinyl copy of Substance which the only album in that format that is of my property. However, it would be cool to have a dad that likes JD, No., Siouxsie or The Cure.... we could sit down and drink some mate while listening to music. [:D]

My mom loves Elvis, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck.

Lately she gets into more modern music like Rod Stewart and Clay Aikens. She listens to Lite-FM.

My dad doesn't listen to any music, has never owned any. ever. he does have a harmonica. Interestingly, he is a full blooded Italian born in Italy.

My mom used to listen to Engelbert Humperdinck. Gospel and we had The Best Of The Beach Boys....everything was on 8 Track.

The last time I visited my folks, I checked out my dad's truck that he's had since the 60's. It still has a 8-track player, and it still works(he had Gordon Lightfoot in it). Man, those 8-track tapes smell funny.

Dad - Mostly listens to classical. I think he likes it a pleasant background music rather than something to focus on. He likes the 50's rock 'n' roll that was around when he was a teenager. I remember him buying the "American Graffitti" soundtrack. Dad went through a country phase in the mid 70's. Even started wearing a cowboy hat & boots. The guy's a college professor who grew up in Chicago fer cryin' out loud! Thankfully he seemed to get that out of his system after a few years. Really cemented my dislike of country music.

Mom - Show tunes, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler etc. with a bit of 60's girl-group thrown in. Used to be a big Neil Diamond fan, not so much now.

Father was mostly into polkas (even talked me into taking up the accordion as a kid. I convinced the teacher to teach me pop songs of the day, but I eventually gave it up...which was good for my social status!). He hated rock 'n' roll, except for Elvis and Buddy Holly. I almost spit out my drink when he told me he heard and liked "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young. His quote: "The guy's pretty creepy looking, but he has a good voice."

My mother listened to country - she said they were the only "true" love songs (rock songs, according to her, were about sex, not love). When she remarried, she listened to some of the soft rock that my stepfather listened to.

I will give them some credit, though - they bought me my first record player when I was only 2, and at that time, you could go to the drugstore and buy shrinkwrapped packs of 45s for cheap. I had things like "Magic Bus" by The Who and "Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young. I received more record players as I aged, and received albums by Eric Carmen, etc.

Both sisters were into Todd Rundgren and Michael Stanley. My "good" sister was into a lot of the "stoner" rock of the '70s, while my "evil" sister was into a lot of R&B...as much as I hate to credit her, she did expose me to Prince and The Time at an early age.

I discovered new wave all on my own - I saw The B-52's on Saturday Night Live in 1979, and it changed my life forever. I think I've discussed this in other threads before, but I was watching it at a friend's house, whose mother was from England. When I said that I liked this new music, he said "Well, that means you're a punk." I thought he meant "hoodlum," and said "No...I'm a good boy!" [:I]

My father grumbled whenever I brought records home, but it was the content, not the fact that I was collecting records. Still, everyone in the family always bought them for me on birthdays, Xmas, etc.

I'm like Fritz. My parents were much older. They loved big band and specifically Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller. My mother also thought Perry Como was great.

As far as modern stuff (or MORE modern stuff) my father liked "Jesus Christ Superstar" when it came out. He also likes the song "Hotel California." My mother tends to listen to MUZAK or elevator music.

My parents were teenagers in the 50's and they liked the Beach Boys and the Beatles (they were married the year the Beatles hit it big)...they always listened to the current music stations when we were growing up...my mom liked Elton John and Wings. My dad was more hip...in fact, he listened to WDRE/WLIR when he would work out in the garage during the late 80's/early 90's....he became a huge R.E.M. fan in the 90's....today, he loves Coldplay, has their first two albums. I think music is what keeps them young...they definitely don't look like their in their 60's!!

I never thought of my parents as old until I saw this thread! My mom's record collection mostly consists of older stuff from Broadway musicals. My dad's favorite music was big band -- stuff like Dorsey and Harry James. He had a collection of old 78 vinyl records that I remember listening to when we were kids. I have to admit, there's some great stuff out there from that era.

My father was from West Virginia, and was really into bluegrass. Probably because of the song "Country Roads", he liked John Denver too much. He also liked Johnny Cash, so that makes up for John Denver. My mom's not really into music, other than the occasional old school country song.
